Recommendation for light laptop

Hi experts,

looking for recommendations for a laptop that I can bring around for business (local and travel) to do presentation (and maybe some light coding).

here are some features i would like to have:

1. Touchscreen & Pen support (as i do annotations, now need to use separate iPad)
2. Good battery life (for travel)
3. Lightweight
4. HDMI port (don't like dongles)
5. has USB A and C ports

Good to have features
6. 1080 camera
7. discrete GPU

Budget wise, would like to get something around 2k or less. But considering discrete GPU maybe have to go higher budget


I somewhat refined to a few models:

1. Apple MBA (no touchscreen, macOS)
2. Thinkpad Yoga / Lenovo Yoga
3. Asus zenbook 14x

Which one will you recommend or any other recommendations welcomed as well.

their xps not bad, has touchscreen

of course, not so budget friendly

pay more but the build is good

find apple macbook ok if you need something light to carry around, no need touchscreen, it is not that easy to touch screen, unless iPad, then get iPad

i would say the thinkpad x13 amd g4 is the best fit. right now got 1 model for just under 2k, has everything u want except a discrete gpu, the latest and greatest ryzen 7840u with pretty decent integrated graphics, 32gb of ram, 1tb nvme and 3y of warranty. the macbook air is also decent if u prefer macos and have a strong focus on battery life, but keep in mind there is not only no touchscreen as u noted but also no hdmi or even usb a ports, so dongles are absolutely necessary. they are also very expensive brand new, with 2k budget only netting u either a 16gb ram + 512gb storage or 8gb ram + 1tb storage for the older m1 variant (with a worse 720p webcam) or if u want m2 only either the 16gb ram or 512gb storage upgrade (both or just a 1tb storage upgrade would be 2.2k). the zenbook is quite a bit over the 2k budget and is the heaviest of the bunch at over 1.5kg compared to around 1.2kg for the x13 and mba, and with the default 13900h and discrete gpu, i dont have high hopes for the battery life.

I'm biased towards the Ts series over the normal T. The Ts series has better materials, so a better build quality.

Since the T14 (first gen), the non-s T series have been made with plastic rather than carbon fibre, and it's not nice feeling.

Go with the Ryzen 7 series because of their RDNA2/3 iGPUs. It's a much better experience than anything from Intel atm. The 780M is almost equivalent to a 1650Ti mobile in benchmarks, so that says quite a bit considering it's integrated.

Just note that the RAM is soldered, so you'll want to max it to 32GB if your budget allows.

If GPU isn't a consideration, try the 2in1 LG Gram. It's also quite the beast, but has inferior Intel Xe graphics. It's lighter than the Thinkpad tho.

thank you i'm looking at T14s now over X13.

For display i see there's a option for touch screen 500 nits. But it comes with eprivacy filter. I read online that even if you can toggle the filter off, it still makes the screen bad for viewing.

Does anyone has any experience with this? eprivacy filter? How is it?

Haven't seen it, but so far most say it's about as bright as a 300nit screen in actual use.

I'd go with the low power 400nit panels if I remain on FHD. They're a decent solution overall, and offer the best compromise across the board - good brightness, sufficient resolution, good colours.

Also, the display got so many pattern, which one to go for? - saw the 400nits discussion above

I don't quite like the red tracking at the middle of the keyboard though..

no, wireless wan refers to sim card support for 4g cellular data. wifi is already included, in the wireless section just above the wireless wan selection, stated is qualcomm nfa725a.

Thank you. I will consider the 400 nits, the downside is for t14s the 400nits will not have touch.

Although i'm not currently using any touch laptops, but i'm seeing the use-cases as i use iPad on a daily basis. Having one device to write on and use as laptop could be useful.

the red trackpoint is a signature for ThinkPad. I've seen expert users in the past using it and it's amazing how precise it can get versus the trackpad. Myself however, having owned a ThinkPad previously, i didn't use it, still using mouse.

you mean T14s? on lenovo official the price can range from 1.6 to 2k depending on screen selection.

I went to bugis junction lenovo store but they didn't have any display units for T14s and also screen configuration (especially with eprivacy filter), i think need to go to funan to try my luck.

this is actually my 2nd x1. The first one i have is still functioning fine, but i pass to my wife to use. And I lug around a legion 5 for 1 year. Now I want to go back to lightweight so bought x1 again, but not before seriously considering the other mighty contenders like zenbook 14x, ThinkPad 14s and x13
