anything with ryzen 6000 and above in lazada can play games. its like having a dedicated gtx1650.
not really, have to be careful of the name. for 7000 series and later, have to make sure the 3rd digit is 4 (eg 7840, 8840), else ur just buying rebranded 4000 and 5000 series with older and slower vega graphics. the only exception worth considering is the 7735h/hs, which is a rebranded 6800h/hs with the full 12cu rdna2; i wouldnt bother with the 6cu 7335/7535u/h/hs with half the graphics capability.

I m using 8845hs. You are better of with Ryzen 5 5500 and a rx6600 and it's cheaper too.

Thanks for recommending, i decided to go back to an AIO PC as they now support HDMI input for my wfh needs.
Purchased a Lenovo AIO PC at CEE last weekend.

Both the Ryzen 6000 and 7000 series uses the same RDNA 12CU solution. The likes of 7840H uses RDNA3, but in reality, there is not much difference in performance despite higher clock speed and faster memory.

not all of them.
vegardnaX (<12cu)rdna2 12cu
7330u
7530u
7730u
6600h/hs/u (6cu rdna2)
7320u (2cu rdna2)
7335u (6cu rdna2)
7440u (4cu rdna3)
7520u (2cu rdna2)
7535h/hs/u (6cu rdna2)
754Xu (4cu rdna3)
7640h/hs/u (8cu rdna3)
7645hx (2cu rdna2)
7745hx (2cu rdna2)
7845hx (2cu rdna2)
6800h/hs/u
6900h/hs/hx
7735h
7736u
7840h/hs/u (rdna3)
as u can see, the vast majority of 6000/7000 series run less than 12cu or even vega. people who are not careful might buy a 7000 series cpu thinking they got rdna graphics but end up with vega which is pretty old at this point and significantly worse cu for cu. even rdna2 with 6cu might not be much better than maxed out vega, so in order to get the performance jump u need to really discern which cpus have the full 12cu.

I mean if you are comparing the same series, i.e. Ryzen 7 6800 vs 7840. I understand that lower end model have lesser GPU solutions.

riding on this thread as well. New house coming soon, and i intend to get a mini pc to be a home theatre streaming device. This is to replace my aging mini X tv box which struggles to play 4k movies, but it can pass through HD audio to my receiver.

any recommendations for a mini pc that can:
- stream FHD/4K movies from my NAS
- connect to my yamaha sound projector and pass through HD audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS MA) signals over hdmi

Was looking at the Asus PN41 with Intel celeron processor, but would that be an overkill or underkill?

Also, most of the mini pc specs i saw doesn't really mention about passing through HD audio to an external amp/receiver...

What you need is probably not a mini-pc but:
  • A well planned home wired network
  • A NAS with video transcoding capability (optional if you had Shield)
  • A capable media tv box like nvidia shield
  • PLEX/EMBY/Jellyfin media server
I am streaming my movies on 4k, Dolby Vision and audio format for ATMOS to my Sonos ARC in my MBR and Living room using PLEX. I also stream video content to all mobile devices at home, all my families and extended family members over VPN or reverse proxy.

Learn more about home networking, can check out the networking and internet section of the forum.

Thanks,

i alreday have a NAS, but its a basic NAS 220j which does not have video transcoding. will a high end nas be able to decode HD audio signals as well?

I was hoping to let the mini pc do the transcoding, like my mini x tv box does now. I figured a mini pc can do more than a tv box like the nvdia shield pro. the mini x is pulling the videos from my nas now, over a wired network.

my plan is to use the mini pc as a htpc, and play videos from the nas using with VLC or Kodi. My only concern is i am not sure if they are able to pass thru the HD audio over HDMI to my receiver. Most mini pc specs don't explicitly mention this, which leads to my frustration of choosing a mini pc.....

Passthrough from your tvbox to your audio system through HDMI will do.

For HT setup, personally I think with the prevalent of media servers, htpc not a seamless solution. But that is just me. With a media server, you can stream to any tv box or mobile devices. But if you need more than just video streaming with transcoding, like retro gaming or web browsing, mini PC could still be a good choice. I had one from AYANEO solely for retro gaming running on BazziteOS (SteamOS -like) Linux. Windows for gaming imo is bloatOS.

Worth considering:

Been a while since I use Kodi when I moved to a media server setup 4-5 years ago when setting up my HT system.

Nvidia Shield Pro sure does and I think it is a worth while investment since it also support video transcoding on the box using PLEX when streaming from your NAS w/o a transcoder. One of the reasons why it still command a premium with the new Shield Pro supporting audio passthrough for ATMOS and Dolby Vision.

I feel like you're better off getting a dedicated player like a Zidoo.

Thanks, but i still prefer to have a mini PC which can double up as an actual PC if required.

The question is still, can mini PC's passthrough HD audio to an external receiver amp? Most mini PC comes with onboard graphics like Intel HD/UHD/Iris and a check seems to say they allow passthrough of HD audio via HDMI. However, would like to hear from guys who actually used it before to confirm if its true.

If you want to download and maintain your library, sure.

Nowadays, it's much easier and cleaner to use streaming services like Kodi/stremio + a debrid service like real-debrid to act as your storage. You still can watch your media and support 4K + DV/HDR10 content. Alternatively, integrate plex-debrid and you never have to maintain your library.

The requirements becomes much more simple:
  • A well planned home network
  • A media device which can support your desired formats like a chromecast with google tv or Firestick HD. Best of the best is still an nvidia shield

Now the difference is paying for a debrid service which costs around 40 euros a year depending on your choice of service.

These days reducing operational overhead is the way to go, we live in a fast paced society afterall. 40 euro.. small price to pay, in fact.. actually paying less as time is also money too. Unless you are targeting to have some learning experience, just focus on getting the solution built quickly.
