Hi all, would like to kindly seek your advice on my first desktop set up. My budget is ranging around $700-800 $900-1000 (I already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse). I usually play games such as Dota2, Fallout 4, Skyrim and do some light video editing. I don't need to build up a monster PC with Ultra High settings, just above average will do.

I also have zero experience in building any DIY PC so it will be good if you guys can also share a recommended person/outlet I can go to buy and what I should look out for?

Thanks in advance! Hoping to get a stable and sturdy rig that can last me a few years.

Some beginner-friendly and reputable options (in no order of preference or ranking):

  • fortran (in HWZ forums; assemble and deliver to your house)
  • nigel (in SLS; assemble at shop)
  • one dragon king (in SLS; assemble at shop)
  • t258jgn (in HWZ forums; sell parts only, no assembly)
  • tamjinhang (in VR-Zone forum; sell parts and also assemble. delivery I dunno)

There are other shops in SLS that also offer competitive prices and services. Worth patronizing, but you need to go research yourself to find out which is shady and which is OK. If things are too cheap, perhaps there is a catch somewhere.

Thanks for the comprehensive list! Then I might go looking for fortran.

How about in terms of the hardware? Anything you could personally recommend with regards to my usage and budget?

Convergent has some old stock on Carousell. Some of the items are quite good value for money.

You can also look at some of the builds suggested by MoneyFace and other regular posters for ideas.

You want to play games and edit video, better get Core i5 at least. Try to budget around $1k to $1.2k. This is the ideal case.

If you really cannot afford, and can afford to compromise, don't mind slower and waiting longer, ask him what's the best he can do with $700-$800.

Probably he can squeeze out a Pentium G3258 or Core i3 system, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD. GPU maybe some AMD R7 250 series.

Frankly at this budget, it is a budget system usually used for Microsoft office work, web surfing or YouTube. You have to manage your expectation.

Desktop might be cheap, but not that cheap for gaming. You have to managed your expectations right with that budget.

Like what other people have suggested here, you might want to up your budget or suffer processing loss for the trade off for gaming processing.

so why not increase it, and ask him if 1k able to do or not.

Yup I asked, he said he only can help me if I can increase my budget to 2.5x or 3x more

Hmmm okay then maybe I'll increase my budget to about 1k. I'm not really sure of the budget expectations!

Thanks Moneyface! I think I would be increasing my budget to $1k, do you think you can work with that amount better?

You mean go PM them and ask what they are able to offer based on my budget?
