recommendation for upgrade over current pc rig

budget $1k, use back gfx card and psu.

played all sort AAA titles lag like hell, play re2 remake, borderlands 3, witcher 3 all lag.

even diablo 2 remake also lag.

I suspect its cpu issue instead of gpu.

any recommendations ?

do a clean install. (Not reset).
If you want to do a new system what is your budget?

FYI if you want best gaming performance, I recommend MATX setup would be better than ITX
mainly due to heat.

sorry i failed to mentioned, now quite often the pc will auto restart on it own. its an hardware failure but i don't know which.

In my experience CPU upgrade can help alot in games. 2 years back I upgraded from i5 4690 to Ryzen 3600, with same card gtx1070ti.

Massive improvement in most games in terms of how smooth the game runs. So I think my old CPU really bottlenecks the system.

also nowdays for no reason, pc auto restart on its own quite frequently.. one of the hardware is faulty.. but dunno is which.

auto restart is psu or ram. try replace those 2 first.

may use afterburner to monitor cpu temp & util during gaming to confirm if it's indeed cpu bottleneck?

Same here but I upgrade to Intel.
Think not only because of faster CPU but newer CPU supports DDR4 which is faster than DDR3.
DDR3 RAM are very hard to find brand new one and can be pricey compare with DDR4.

- RAM
Run Memtest when you have the time.

- SSD
Run Crystalmark if it reboots/crash that means SSD have issue.

- Power supply

- Windows
