If I recall correctly, I was given a headset with an English audio guide that time (2016). Those headset that you would receive in the museum kind.

I checked my video of the tour, the on board ship, the introduction of the island was in Japanese.
Thanks for helping to check! Ok guess apart from Yamasa Kaiun, the rest of the operators conduct japanese tours only

IMHO Nagasaki battleship island in January depends on weather and operations of the ships. (<80% chance of proceeding based on pass normal years) they also seem to have started doing maintenance in November to January.

have you gone to ikeshima before?

i,m just wondering if it is any easier or more likely of me to go to this island instead of hashima although the weather is likely to be similar since the two are somewhat in the same region.

that said. it still takes 3hrs to travel to sasebo then ikeshima. it is not like i can last minute change the location if hashima trip is cancelled.

Not Ikeshima. I was in Nagasaki for a few days. Sasebo is a bit far from Nagasaki to make last minute changes. Sometimes that’s just part of travelling. You make plans but sometimes have to forgo them for safety or unforeseen circumstances.

Ya I know. I’m greedy.

A part of me knows that ikejima is better which will take a whole day but hashima is more famous.

in order to accommodate this limb, I had to travel 4hrs from beppu. And there seems no shorter way which is equal to time going via fukuoka. I’m thinking of a 7pm train (beppu-fukuoka) stay over then morning train to Nagasaki

if it all goes well, I’ll take the hashima tour at 12pm which is short and spend the evening/night chill at Nagasaki, then day2 2hrs trip in mid day to Sakai/konoura. Day3 ikeshima. Day4 back fukuoka
- 2D1N Nagasaki
- 2D2N Sakai/konoura/ikeshima

that’s a lot to pack into a 9 day trip with almost half of it spend for this limb ; I’ll spend 2D1N for beppu/fuin and 3 days in fukuoka with day trips to mojiko, ainoshima, Kumamoto

If hashima trip cancelled, what’s nice and unique to fill the time in Nagasaki? I’ll have a pm-am-noon slot to fill. If I dun drive…

I mean other than the usual recommendations I saw online for glass bridge chinatown peace park

any places good for sunrise and sunset ?

8:13 looks like a nice location in the golden hours

a somewhat mundane location but more interesting to me than other usual locations

The peace park (if you've been to the one in Hiroshima) and Chinatown (more dead than kobe) are very underwhelming.

The clover garden was not bad while dejima (went only before gunkanjima boat was cancelled) can skip.

so your whole hashima trip is cancelled, or you did the boat ride without landing, aka take photo while surrounding the island then return?

what u say is so true. the tourist attractions looks very boring, and i have to dig quite hard. dejima is fine as it is close to the port if i go hashima.

i find that my trip almost everyday had to travel some distance but i keep it under 3hrs max to/fro. i did quite some sorting so that i can sleep over most places 2 nights each.

D1: F/M1 - arrive fukuoka, daizaifu, mojiko
D2: M/B1 - tsurumi mt, beppu onsen, kifune castle, yukimuri observatory
D3: B/B2 - beppu beach, yufuin, onsen, global tower
D4: B/F1 - return to fukuoka (left open, kiv kumamoto yachiyoza)
D5: F/F2 - ainoshima, miyajidake
D6: F/N1 - nagasaki, hashima, dejima/holland zaka/clover, shianbashi
D7: N/N2 - konoura/ikeshima, garden terrace/inayasama
D8: N/F1 - trams, atomic bomb museum, return to fukuoka
D9: F/F2 - shopping (left open, kiv kumamoto yachiyoza)
D10: return pm.

I did my Kyushu this trip in this manner via trains & bus.

Day 03. Fukuoka > Saga > Fukuoka
Day 04. Fukuoka > Okayama > Fukuoka
Day 05. Fukuoka > Yamaguchi > Fukuoka
Day 06. Fukuoka > Hiroshima > Fukuoka
Day 07. Fukuoka > Oita's Yufuin > Fukuoka
Day 08. Fukuoka > Kagoshima's Sakurajima > Fukuoka *Drop by Kumamoto castle (only viewed from outside as the castle had suffered damage from the earthquake) before going back to Hakata
isnt it very tiring to travel that way? yufuin alone is like 2hrs x 2, and the others seem to be even further.

I think that day the currents too strong or something, so all the boats cancelled from morning, even those not landing.

I did have 2 nights in nagasaki, should have planned to try on both days. But I recall, the first day also rained heavily in the afternoon, so boat would have been cancelled too.

Not the most interesting city but overall not too bad as it's not so crowded and more chill.

Meals were mostly nice too. Had the most amazing chilled tofu at this japanese restaurant in a mall but can't recall exactly where now.

I think some ppl drop by huis ten boch en route from fukuoka but not really my kind of place.

Which mth u went? I’m hoping Jan have better chance as it seems the driest

agree with huis ten. I sort of avoided the following unless they are special or iconic : shrines, churches, amusement parks, zoos/aquariums, but these constitute most of the recommended tourist locations

Nice. Those are your pictures? You post processed to blur the top of the tram?

can I ask
- what is the location of the onsen
- kuramoto castle? Where’s the vantage point?

Hehe yeah I just played with the tilt shift button on the Insta app to get the blur effect. Which onsen are you talking about? The bottom right is Umi jigoku in beppu
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4702.html

Kumamoto castle still got some parts blocked off cos not yet restored from the earthquake. I took some shots along the path to the entrance but actually I think that’s the back of the castle 😅 most ppl just take front-on shot at the castle entrance.
Ya that’s the picture I’m asking. I’m not an onsen fan but the lights and smoke in the evening viewed from the observatory is just so nice. It’s a good break just that so many onsen there it’s hard to choose

And I’m more excited to go yachiyo-za than the castle

Thanks for highlighting. I check out the observatory and it looks like a carpark. There’s a bus stop that is <10 mins walk from it with every half hourly bus I think latest 8+ pm

but not many hotel nearby. Will need to do more homework on this
