Today's i3 is the performance of yesterday i5 and PS system requirements does not increase exponentially with each new version.

We can talk about paper min requirements all day long, but what matters is the actual usage experience.

15 Secs diff.

i3 will do just fine and spend the saved cost on a good PSU:o But, if he has the budget why not. just go with i5:D

That's why I said talks like this is talk on paper. 纸上谈兵. I am talking about real world usage, I'm not keen in what's the paper written min sys requirement that people who doesn't even use Adobe suite regularly talking about.

You can say things like how yesterday's i5 is comparable to a present i3 but you also have to consider that RAW files generated these days are larger due to increments in things like megapixel resolution. 12MP RAWs are just a few years ago but now we are talking about 24-36MP files as well. On paper upgrading from i7-2XXX chip to a i7-4XXX chip may not see a huge improvement in terms of % but for things like generating 100% previews in Lightroom as you process along, that upgrade that my friend did (i7-2XXX-i7-4XXX), that benefit was instantly felt.

GTA V tells you that you can run it with Intel Core 2 Q6600 + 9800GT 1GB but does that translate to a reasonable user experience? Same logic. It's not that TS doesn't have the budget or the cost of going from i3 to i5 is a heaven and earth difference. Why keep pushing i3 to TS when i5 is definitely a better experience with little extra cost which is within his means?

Every cent must be justified and worth it then you continue to run everything with min requirements yourself lor. That level of giam siap-ness is really bth. And it is pretty obvious that people on HWC giving these advice aren't even running on min requirement hardwares on their own most of the time. Pfft.

You see Photoshop is not a batching application, it is like office most of the time it is waiting for user input so that 15s will not matter a lot. Unless you are doing a compute application, then that time saved can accumulate to real time savings.

Depends on usage I guess. I use batch-processing in PS quite often, resize hundreds/thousands of images. That said, I've no idea what the real-world difference i3 v i5 is going to make for a simple resize/save as action multiplied by thousands of files.

I'd look at what the actual price difference is? If it's not significant and it's still within budget, no harm going for the higher spec. Saves on a premature upgrade if needs unexpectedly change, say next year or what. Then it would be more than justified. Forecasting upcoming needs can be a prudent use of resources too. At the end of the day all TS said was 'some graphic work', so we also dunno what scope of PS work we talking... :s13:

Jialat... triggered a debate. But both side have their points lah :)

It's just that I am so out of touch so I need to start asking again. I thought it would cost way more and over-budgeted for it.

So a 1k rig excluding monitor seems alright and the i5 will probably allow me to eventually do other things with it if I want to do so. With the spare cash, get myself a good backup system? :D

But I am also open to other configurations except I am not too comfortable in running with minimum requirements.

Past experience with it have been... quite frustrating.

Just keep the spare cash for future upgrades along the way. That will maintain your future proofing rig as long as it can be.

I know that exact feeling because my office have a lot of out-of-date PCs in my opinion but these "systemadmins" who doesn't does the related work thinks that they are still suitable.

Oh well maybe indeed to them, running things like Microsoft Excel, the old Core 2 CPU can liao. True, can boot can liao right? Wait till you handle large data files - my data entry temp staff have to day in day out handle data sources that have few thousand lines of data in the excel spreadsheet. Make one mistake and you kum gong go press the "back" button, prepare for a 50% chance that the excel will hang there. I always tell them to manually correct the mistake and don't use the "back" function. Sometimes I see them dragging hundreds of lines of data using the mouse and the amount of lag when they do that (scrolling down)... GG. My previous laptop was a 5 years old model so it was comparable to that Core 2 PC and I can rage at that shitty laptop almost every single day.

Thankfully for higher estab staffs like me, we were given a brand new ultrabook this year. Although still using HDD but at least we get a i5-4200U processor in it. Doing the same data entry report was a heaven and hell difference. No hanging nonsense if use "back" or all the lagging shits when making large selections. The same report I do on my ultrabook in 20mins, that temp staff probably take 30-35mins to do. Sure, 10-15mins difference you say but we got other stuffs to do as well. That's the productivity difference.

Everytime Intel release a new gen proc the i3 bar is raised. It is now the fourth gen i3 performance is close to 2nd gen i5.
Only funny people who don't optimize their harddisk space and running process thinks it is the fault of the processor.

Yup, sysadmins who will always tell you this and that but ask them come chut their power, no improvements

Those PCs got reformatted and reflashed and went back to default and still same old ****. Ask them what's the problem, no direct answer, suggest you go reformat/reflash again, waste time.
