Your choice will depend on what you want to focus on. You want FM radio, so that means a receiver (Or: An amplifier with tuner capability). Will it be receiving signal from the TV with just one cable, or will all the different sources connect to it while it connects to the TV? If it is the latter, you need an AVR. Want to playback MP3 files via thumbdrive? Then it is now called a player. Add network and wireless capabilities (and also Spotify) and it becomes a network player.

How many speakers? If more than 2, pretty much you need AVR. Qty is important since $2k is a lot for 2 but very little for 6.

Hi wwenze, thanks for your information. I am a noob in audio stuff.

I am looking for a unit with radio, can play MP3 from USB thumbdrive, as well the TV sound can goes through it which will be using the system speakers to enhance the sound output (not sure if it is the correct description for the TV part)...

Based on your reply below with regards to TV, what is the difference?

Will it be receiving signal from the TV with just one cable, or will all the different sources connect to it while it connects to the TV? If it is the latter, you need an AVR

For speakers, I am looking at max of 3, one front and 2 side.. but my living room is small, so maybe 2 front speakers is enough.

Saw this unit, but my friend told me it has no radio receiver.

Budget is flexible. Even though im noob, i do appreciate good sound, but between good and excellent well I do not think I am good enough to discern the difference.

I put it this way so it much easier less confusing.
So your usage is more towards music?
Not so much of movies or gaming?
If so there are many compatible stereo amp capable to do music.

However for movies or gaming it is recommended to go for AVR.
I summarize so easier to understand:
Stereo amp/Hifi - Music (TV can use but through RCA/Optical input
depending on the model)
AVR - Surround sound mostly for movies and gaming with more than 5 speakers.

What he meant was actually do you intend for simple switching or not.
Cuz AVR you only need one HDMI ARC to your TV while devices connected to it are easily switching from one and other VIA AVR.

Not to mention HDMI have HDMI device control function which means
you can control both AVR and TV using one remote even some compatible devices.

Stereo amp wise depending on the model, if it is RCA based cable you may have a lot of RCA cable from different sources.
However gaming console or even some media player doesn't have RCA output so do take note.

Again depend which you want but I still recommend you for AVR.
Do have time and visit Adelphi see which setup suits you.
$2K for a decent AVR + speaker isn't enough.

Micro hiifi/Stereo amp + floorstanding speaker should be enough.
Hope this helps.

I am looking for usage mainly into music, not into gaming or movie sounds. So maybe amp more suitable for me? But I will still like the TV sounds to come out from the system, and switching is fine for me..

Just read up more. AVR has all in one, ARC-tuner-MP3, but for music not as good.

For AMP with ARC, don't really have tuner and MP3 so need to buy separately.

As well my setup I can only use bookshelf speakers.

Hi,

Maybe you can look into MCR-611
http://www.lazada.sg/marantz-micro-network-receiver-mcr-611-black-7903198.html?mp=1&rs=anson-audio

- It comes with 2 Digital optical inputs for TV or Digital device
- It comes with Internet Radio (I had another model and it has Singapore Radio station via internet). But you still can your FM tuner inside

- It comes with Wifi (so you can Airplay your music from Iphone to the MCR-CR611)

- THE USB port allow you to play music of the following format
http://manuals.marantz.com/MCR611/EU/EN/OKNRSYxkoomnbj.php

his unit is compatible with USB memory devices in “FAT16” or “FAT32” format.
This unit can play back the following files.
MP3
WMA
WAV
MPEG-4 AAC
FLAC
ALAC
AIFF
DSD (2.8 MHz)

- It only support 2 channel (Left and right) which is how music works. Don't waste time on a Center speaker for music.

Speaker you can look out for
DALI Opticon 2 Bookshelf Speaker (or you can choose to pair withany bookshelf speaker)
http://www.lazada.sg/dali-opticon-2-bookshelf-speaker-black-7430217.html

I am not any re-seller but happen to saw a bundle when i google
http://www.e77.asia/_p/prd1/4482453341/product/package-6:-dali-zensor-1-+-marantz-mcr611

http://www.e77.asia/_p/prd1/4482454941/product/package-8:-podspeakers-minipod-+-marantz-mcr611

Lastly the AMP is compact in size , USB port that is able to play FLAC File and 2 optical

Not really sometimes online can be cheaper if you have

- Cashback
- Rebate
- Coupon (Qoo10 Audiohouse and a few audio shop has store there)

But still you need to walk around in Sim Lim Sq and The Adelphi to check out the price first...

I think with rebate also cannot compare.
I was looking around, Lazada sell PMA50 and PM6006 for 800. In simlim and adelphi you can get for 620 and 580 respectively. Further more, you walk around adelphi have a lot ex-stock sales, condition good and cheap. Funny thing is those sellers on Lazada, sell cheaper at their shops in adelphi. :D
