Building gaming computer for son.

Thinking of getting i5-7600K CPU.
Need recommendation on MB to go with above CPU.
Not into overclocking at the moment.

Usage :
Gaming : current: Overwatch Future: Battlefront 2.
Others: like to use Photoshop and Lightroom and streaming movies.

Rams maybe Gskill ripjaws V series 16Gb and PSU EVGA Supernova 650W G2. both will be purchased from Amazon.

Thanks for any input.

7600K is a really bad choice in performance and value.

In gaming look at the 6600k OC vs. 6700k stock
Or i7k stock vs OC 6600K for extrapolating to 7600K.

1. i5 has poorer frame times than i7, poorer multi threading
2. It lacks power efficiency due to the overclock, and yet doesn't perform better consistently
3. If you want a higher overclock potential, you'll need to overspend on the heat sink while you don't have to on the i7 locked
4. Check out Z270 + i5K price vs. H110 + i7 locked price, the answer becomes pretty clear that its not a good buy.

Note: Reason for pulling out 6700K stock's because 7700 stock frequency sits at 6700K levels in the real world.

If you want something at i5 or i5k level for games Ryzen 5 1600/1600x is a more balanced solution.

Just some small 2cents advice. Really should consider just go ryzen 5 1600 + gtx 1070 or gtx 1060 build. Ryzen 5 1600 has more cores better for those productivity task and also for future AAA titles that will utilize more cores.

If really have to go intel go for 7700 + 1060 3gb or gtx 1070.

If you are not into overclocking, then don't have to consider the K series of Intel processors. Motherboard can go for the cheaper H270, B250 or H110 series. The money saved can go towards a better graphics card or something else.

Intel i5 or i7 has better gaming performance for now (approx 10 to 15% faster than AMD Ryzen) but in the future, games might take advantage of more cores which will tilt the balance in favor towards AMD Ryzen.

Anyway, what is your budget?

go for ryzen.. don't make the same mistakes as me.. buy one day exchange all :s13:..

yes single core it might lose by like 10%.. but multicore it can beat by like 50%.. after i saw the charts i just swapped all the parts i bought :/.

single core performance might benefit in games for now, for overall usage the ryzen will perform better.. and maybe in the future games will utilise all the cores properly which then there will be no advantages to that intel chip

Thanks for the advice! Budget is <1.2k USD (not including casing and OS), would prefer to get 1070 for GFX, not very sure about the MB and processor -_-"

Im the intended recipient of the said pc btw =)

Chose 7600K as was recommended by pcgamer.com.

Now, socket LGA 1151 and available LGA 2066 CPUs all using non solder TIM...

If you want Intel, best get socket LGA 2011-3 CPUs. =:p

Otherwise, AMD Ryzen 1700 with the Asus Prime X370 Pro. :D

Comments from pcbuilder:
Even though more and more games DOES support more threads, this is still evolving really slowly. Very few games are actually optimized for 4 cores CPUs and it will take years before 6 cores become the norm.
3) FPS is NOT tied with the number of core within your CPU. Your CPU, in fact has almost no impact on graphic quality/performance. That's your GPU's job. Having low FPS is mostly, if not only, your GPU's fault. Your CPU will help for AI calculation, mathematical operations that doesn't revolve around graphic and everything else that isn't graphic work (damage calculation in RPGs, etc...).

Confused.

For your reference, games performance doesn't suck in Ryzen. It's the optimization. Do note, AMD just got back into the market. I rather have a 6 cores 12 threads by sacrificing 10% performance in single/dual cores stuff, than having 4 cores 4 threads which is only presently going well due to years of optimization for Intel.

Here's an example how come Ryzen have better potential and it's a better buy.

Sent from PM me if you wanna build a DIY PC or wanna learn how to make one yourself :D using GAGT

Er it really depends on the game.. some games will benefit more from single core performance, some benefit from more cores etc..

Some games can't utilize all the cores, so more reliant on single core performance.

Some games are more CPU reliant, some games are more GPU reliant, if you are not aiming to get 200+ fps in cs:go because of the crappy engine and frame delay, then it doesn't really matter, most of the juice from GPU is enough to get you 60+ frame if not bottlenecking. Just an example.

If we are talking about CPU performance alone, read below.
Does the 1600x beat 7600k? Overall CPU performance from 1600x wrecks the 7600x anyday, that margin is huge.
Ryzen-5-1600X-Cinebench-Multi-Core_04.jpg

OC-able mobos are also a lot cheaper on the ryzen side, which means you get more for less.

For Gaming, it might lose out a little bit because of single core peformance, but not all games and it won't lose out forever. At this point, i am assuming the GPU is not bottlenecking.

Thank you all for all the info and advise.

Though have assembled computers in past, no knowledge of requirements for games as personally not into any games at all.

I will leave it to u0603020 to make difficult decision cpu/mb combination based on all the advise/info here.

Ppl generally recommend good product here, and believe me AMD Ryzen is the true game changer this time.

Intel no longer hold supreme in the cpu market. If you realised what they have progressed in the past 6 years, you will know see that their advancement is mediocre at best.

Would love to have 16 GB ram, 1 TB or 500 MB SSD and at least a 650W Gold PSU, also I'll need to source for a decent tower (no need to be too flashy).

The etherium mining surge is increasing GPU prices so I might reuse my old GPU till it cools down -_-

Thanks for the recommendation folks!
