Hi mate,

Thanks in advance for being so helpful in providing advice to novice like us:-

My son is going to commence its study in poly soon. What would you recommend in term of brand and model of laptop, budget is around $1000~$1200.

Looking at essential criteria as follows,
- Preferably large screen (14" and above)
- Weight (below 2kg)
- Performance: Balance between decent graphic system for multi-media, like video editing (via Adobe Premier) and design/architecture work (via Autocad)

Appreciate if you can recommend a few options for me to consider.

Again your help is very appreciated!

Regards,
Danny

Hey, from the performance requirements you mentioned, you should get a laptop with at least, an Intel core i5 processor, Nvidia GT 700 series Graphics card and 4GB of RAM.

Here are some options,

Aspire V5-573PG (Retail at $1398 sgd):

Windows 8 - Intel Core i5 (i5 - 4200U, 1.60 GHz, 3 MB) - 39.6 cm (15.6") LED - 16:9 HD - Active Matrix TFT Colour LCD - NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M Up to 4 GB - 4 GB DDR3L SDRAM - 500 GB Serial ATA - No - Weight (Approximate) 2.20 kg - Maximum Battery Run Time 6.50 Hour

HP ENVY 15-j126tx Notebook PC (Retail at $1399 sgd)

Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ (2.4 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 cores), NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M (2 GB DDR3 dedicated), 15.6" diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080), 8GB RAM, 750gb 5200rpm HDD.

They are probably priced less at shops since these are the online prices, should fit your budget of less than 1.2k. If you can wait, the June IT show will have better deals!

I believe poly has quite a good deal for its students. You might want to eait for them to offer?

With $1200 budget, the only laptop he can get from poly road show is either Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 for $1110.60 or HP EliteBook 8000 Series for $1199

Between these two laptops, I'm definitely vote for the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 because it has bigger storage, faster wireless card and slightly lighter compared to the HP Elitebook 8000 Series

Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 i7-3632QM/8GB RAM/GT 620M 2GB/14" 1366x768/1TB HDD/DVD RW/2.1kg

After looking through the latest IT show brochures (early Mar 2014), I couldn't find a laptop within your budget with better specs than the two laptops I mentioned above

And I don't think you could get a brand new laptop with your budget if you're buying outside for a laptop with weight less than 2kg and has i7 quad core, 8GB RAM and dedicated graphics card

if you can push your budget up by to $1335, you can get the lenovo y410p from poly road show which has a DDR5 Gt755m graphics card, quad core i7-4700m, 8gb ram and the best thing is it comes with 3years on-site warranty which itself is worth over $100 plus to upgrade
