Hi all,

i need some recommendation for a new desktop cpu
or laptop.

my usage is mainly backup iphones/ipad and photos.
maybe simple word / excel usage
internet browsing / youtube

currently i am using an asus ul20 notebook (6 yrs old )
i think its time to get a new one

a desktop i can use the hdmi and link to my TV so not an issue.
laptop must be lighter than current one.

last is budget maybe S$500-600 as it is used occasionally and not on a daily basis. desktop should be as small as possible but not those intel stick.

Thanks!

Do you need to bring it out of your house or move it around your house?

At this budget, the laptop models are most likely some budget low end Celeron or Atom based laptop, with 2 gb ram and 500 gb storage if you're lucky or 64 gb eMMC storage of you are not. More like a netbook of sort. But a laptop almost without fail would have a VGA or HDMI port to connect to a projector or TV.

hi ykgoh,

Thanks!

not necessary to bring it out of home,
desktop will be placed near TV with BT mouse and keyboard
laptop .. still need to bring along power adapter as well.
Atom i think not good enough , celeron maybe can consider
64 eMMC a little too small. (itune backup of 3iphones/2 ipads - all 64GB)
desktop will need hdmi, laptop not necessary.
currently using the asus UL20A laptop - batt dying, running of SSD

regards

Sounds like TS needs a HTPC or Mac Mini-equivalent to pair up with a TV.

In this case the laptop display will be redundant. No point buying a laptop then.

hi jedi5diah,

thanks!
well to be honest, this PC/laptop is seldom powered on
i mainly use it for backing up my phones/ipads
initially i was looking for laptop then i am open for desktop htpc
because i know that it will be seldom powered on , maybe twice in a month or week. i am certain it is not everyday.
that why having a laptop with batteries tuck away at one corner, it is a bit wasted.

regards

Intel NUC6i3SYH or NUC5I3RYH.

It's a barebone kit so you need a RAM, OS and hard drive (potentially reuse the 2.5 inch HDD in the old asus laptop).

Reuse your notebook HDD and Windows 7 OS (using the product key written on the sticker at bottom of your notebook)

NUC+RAM: MSI Cubi-002 BUS + Crucial DDR3L 8GB Dual Channel Kit SO-DIMM @ $240 (Amazon US)
Just 0.5 litres small! Palm small!
Can be SGD$30 cheaper if you wait for it to reach USD$129!

Amazon US prices after estimated local bank conversion rate at SGD1.40 and inclusive of shipping charges (if any).

MSI Cubi-BUS002 comes with:
CPU: Intel Pentium 3805U (Broadwell-U)
Fast as a typical notebook.
GPU: Intel HD Graphics (Broadwell)
WIFI+BT: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 Plus Bluetooth
