Recommendations for a new Mobo & processor for my old PC

Hi Folks
I have a 3 year old DIY PC which was diagnosed to have a motherboard failure. The warranty just expired. Unlucky. I just fitted the SSD. It was fine till then. After fitting the SSD, it could not switch off. It just kept powering up by itself. I brought it back and even a second opinion was that the mobo is gone. Now, it will not even power up. Black screen. So here.

Corsair Vengeance 1600 8GB
Procolour 1Gb 6870 DDR 5 PCI-E
Samsung 1TB SATA2
Samsung 22x DVD RW
Samsung 840 EVO 250Gb SATA 3 SSD
Seasonic M1211 620W
LG Blu Ray player (Faulty - Opens and close)

I use the computer for gaming, playing music, movies and some work with MS Office. Games I play include Call of Duty Ghost, Battlefield 4. So fairly simple requirements.

My old mobo gave up after one year. I did a RMA under warranty, but it was a pain as they sent it back to Taiwan for repairs before replacing it. Took about 5 weeks. I don't think much of MSI now. Want to have a durable mobo and willing to sink in more money for it.

Can I keep my old GPU and change the mobo and processor for now? Will upgrade the GPU later when budget permits. Appreciate your suggestions

Since MSI is not gonna be your choice of mobo anymore then you can go for

Asrock B85M Pro 4 + i5-4570 ~ $355

in electronics, its all about luck.

i've been using MSI mobo for more than 15 yrs and it had never failed me.

never even RMA once in my life time and usually it'll last me 7yrs and i got to get a new comp to keep up with new games.

i'll still recommend MSI/Asrock for a mobo that is reliable and value for $.

ASUS/gigabyte, I find them a little on the pricey side but they are good too.

I think just skip haswell and wait for broadwell. Your system is still pretty good in today's context. Just upgrade the gpu first then next year, go for broadwell.

Could u find any cheap mobo replacements or 2nd hand market?

I dun see the need for him to upgrade his gpu. It's still quite a good gpu.

True haswell performance increase is pretty disappointing as expected as its orientated more for notebook and portable devices .

I think that you don't need to upgrade your GPU unless you feel bottled down by it already. Keep your current processor and get a cheap replacement, the absolute bare minimum that you need to use your PC for your purpose.

Hmm are u very certain that ur mobo is faulty? As it might be ur graphics card, PSU or even ur casing power button that is causing ur system unable to power off.
Currently, powering on ur CPU only display black screen. Do u have any spare graphics card u can test it with?

I had before a situation where I tot that my mobo also died since powering it on with no display. Lucky I had another graphics card to test my system with so I end up RMA my graphics card just before the warranty ended.
