Recommendations for Macbook Air battery replacement?

Hello,

am hoping that someone will have some recommendations on where to purchase or replace a macbook air battery. (a1237 model)

I am ok with replacing the battery myself as long as I know where to get my hands on it.

If all else fails, I intend to order the battery from ifixit which totals up to about 170sgd.

But if there are good places in singapore to get the battery, I would rather get it locally.

hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!

The thing about buying from a local shop, they may insist on fixing it for you which will cost you a bit more for the labor fee.

You can try Infinique service @ SLS #04-04, owner sold me a macbook pro part at quite reasonable price not like one of the other shop who quoted $20 more eventhough I was going to fix it myself. Still, I think you should expect to pay around $150 for it.

If you want to try 3rd-party battery, you can consider ordering from OWC

But correct me if I am wrong, but as long as i am not getting it replaced by apple, all the other batteries are 3rd party right? so far ive found unicell, owc and of course ifixit and it seems that they are all 3rd party solutions.

Some of mac shops do carry original parts in stocks so you can get some luck if you wish to get OEM batteries. Well actually Apple don't even carry any more parts for your model of Macbook Air, anything older than 5 years are considered Vintage products. You probably have higher chance on using aftermarket batteries.

Vintage products are those that were discontinued more than five and less than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued hardware service for vintage products with the following exception:

Macintosh products purchased in the country of Turkey.
Owners of vintage Macintosh products may obtain service and parts from Apple service providers within the country of Turkey.
Products purchased in the state of California, United States, as required by statute.
Owners of vintage Macintosh products may obtain service and parts from Apple service providers within the state of California, United States.
Owners of vintage iPod products in the state of California may obtain service from Apple Retail Stores or by contacting AppleCare at 1-800-APL-CARE.
Owners of vintage iPhone products in the state of California may obtain service from Apple Retail Stores or by contacting AppleCare at 1-800-APL-CARE.

i got my part from unicell, their prices quite fair. Dun have to shop around too hard if the difference is little.

All this 3rd party or not is just a classification as they cannot sell anything under the Apple brand. But you have to watch out for the terms OEM and compatible. Compatible means the specs are suitable for the device but not necessary made for it. OEM means the same specs as the original parts and made for it, probably by the same manufacturers who supple directly or indirectly to Apple.

Of cos, they can claim whatever they wan. Anyway, another reason why I chose unicell, is they offer OEM parts and warranty. Means anything happen can go back change immediately.

$150 a bit too high if just buying parts. It should be between 60-80 there about depending on capacity.

there were some other dubious offers from some shops there for "ORIGINAL" batteries at 120 which I turned down. After I turned down, offered me at 90 dollars lololol.

Gonna install the battery and report back here in a couple of days if its all good.

remember to calibrate the battery once to confirm the capacity, if it is below stated, go and get it changed. Also you can look at the usage count to see if its new.

I trust unicell la, but still doesn't hurt to make sure.

hey thanks for the tips, but how do I calibrate the battery? im doing some updating now, will check system profiler later to check out the battery usage. but like you said i got good vibes from unicell, service seemed decent and honest.

yeap, its a brand new spanking battery with charge cycle of 1 and capacity of 5800 as advertised. lets hope the performance actually holds.

If this works, its really much cheaper than ifixit's solution of 130USD after shipping. And in anycase, not sure what battery ifixit is providing anyway.

i'm pretty sure ifixit will be selling the same OEM kind of batteries as Apple do not do reselling of parts.

Anyway, to check charge capacity, you charge it to 100% and then use it until 0% without charging, meaning the laptop auto go into hibernation, then you charge it back up to 100% and you check system profile for the updated figures

you should do this every few months to check if the charge figure drops drastically. (if drop significantly within 6 months, its defective and you should get it changed). but I myself don't bother. Just use.

anyway, based on what you posted. MBA rated battery is 6700mAh,

so your battery is at 86% condition. Apple replaces it normally if it drops below 80% (if i remember correctly)

so realistic speaking, if you replace the battery, you will get back the addition 14% battery life. Now you have to ask yourself, the money you pay is it worth this 14%?

You don't use your MBA that much eh? 293 Cycle count for 3 years usage? My 2011 MBP is more than twice that amount.

Install Coconut Battery to see detailed specs like Design capacity to see how much the battery has dropped.

But the battery drop few percent in just few minutes....
It's like my battery go dead after 1-2 hour of normal surfing with Wi-Fi...in just seconds my batt can go from 100 to 98%

Yes I don't really use much cause I got iPad. Will download the app and post here again.
Not sure if it's my battery going low or something is consuming high battery...but then I don't have much stuff running

hmmm i just checked that i have turned on the FileVault previously that even me forgetting about it. But now i can't turn it off..... it will just give me a prompt asking to turn off only after finishing..and remaining time is 600++ days... really self pawn....

Your battery only holding 80%, that's the main reason why...

I think it's worth a change but u mentioned you don't use much so I dunno....

Just wondering. Do you guys leave the macbook battery charging at all times?

Is it okay to do so? Will the macbook/Mac OS stop the charging once it reaches full charging?
