Dear formers, bro n sister experts,

Need your expert advice here - am looking at having a personal system where it will enable me to access my documents/pictures/videos via secure login anywhere in the world so long as I have internet access.

What would you recommend I use cloud or have somewhat a network 'server' thing? (pardon my IT knowledge, not too sure what is called but heard of something like that). I am skeptical of having a 'cloud' subscription in terms of security and not very willing to have a monthly payment to maintain my documents.

Any advice and comments would be most appreciated, please.

Thank you in advance.

many solutions available to achieve this :

1) VPN router with VPN client installed on our laptop or SSL VPN which you can VPN into your home network through your router's web gui

2) TeamViewer unattended installed on your PC which is always on and teamviewer client installed on your laptop

3) subscribe to cloud storage service providers like Dropbox, MS Onedrive, Google Drive, iCloud or Amazon...

maintaining your own hardware runs the risk of it breakdown at some unfortunate point in time... unless you have 2 or more sets of backup (ie. MORE hardware, more points where it can breakdown). And they WILL breakdown.

Putting info in cloud is safer (relatively speaking, but of course no guarantee). I just bought Office 365 coz it now offers unlimited storage for about $100 a year. You can buy 1 new 2T HDD or a 2.5" 1TB HDD a year. But they will break down, so in theory I need to buy 2 of them.... seems more expensive to me.

If you don't have that much info, just use the free versions. A bit in Google, a bit in Microsoft, a bit in Dropbox, etc.
