i tried Coca last saturday and finally realise what you guys were raving about.
the ingredients were really fresh! the meat was sort of crunchy, not chewy, but its not the very thin sliced ones. the prawns were big and fresh. their meatballs got lemongrass flavor one. the chilli also very nice. the pig liver very bloody and nice also.
then still got people help you clear the dishes and change the plates one. ambience good not noisy. all in all i really enjoyed it, will save up the next time to go there eat again.
oh yah, that was my lunch so quite cheap compared to dinner, about 26nett per person.
coca standard drop a lot from the days when they have so many branches. Dinner is very expensive too. They used to be my benchmark for steamboat...but has fallen from grace. It just get....more lousy over the years...
I recommend Soon Heng. Service and everything is similar to coca (not so professional la, it's a family run biz after all) Dinner is net 20 bucks. Cheap and good
There is cooked food like chicken wings ( those really deep fried ones i like) + korean style beef, chicken and fried taohu.
For the steamboat stuff rite, normal stuff is fresh ( FYI, good prawn are not the big ones, but smaller one, where body is about size of ur index finger as they are sweeter and more tender. Big does not equate good) but wat soong heng is really good for are the below
1. Dumplings. One of the hidden good stuff they dun serve upfront. Veggie, prawn and meat type. Problem is they tend to deep freeze it, so when u just dump it in, the inside is not cooked. Trick is to order asap, cook other stuff first and let it thaw. Probably the best ones i tasted in steamboat places all over.
2. Beef. You dun get wagyu beef, but they slice the beef
really really thin, just hot dip in soup for 5 seconds, dip into chili sauce and eat. As close to heaven u can get for 20 bucks...i usually eat 10 plates or more...
3. Tofu. Lol, I think they serve the normal silk tofu , but together with the chili sauce..Yums.
And it's feels clean. I really dun like those beach road $10 steamboat where u get ur stuff from a pile...Eee. Dirtly and the way the food is prepared smacks of unhygiene.
