Recommendations to go to Taroko Gorge

Hi all,

I will be going to Taiwan from 21st Feb to 1st Mar. I will only stay at Taipei from 21st Feb to 25th Feb though.

My question is do you all suggest to go for this tour

My thoughts are:
  1. I am keen to go Taroko Gorge.
  2. I am not sure if it is worth paying MORE to go for this tour - jet plane.
  3. It seems that the only plus point (about this tour) is i can travel to, finish Taroko Gorge and come back within 1 day? :s11:
  4. I can experience the same Taroko Gorge by hiring a driver (for 1 day only?) or I can research how to go there by myself.

Any thoughts, comments and opinions will be very much appreciated. :D

Note: I have not been to Taroko Gorge and I do not know how to go there by myself. So i do not know how difficult or easy to go there. I will need to find out the recommended travel mode on how to make my way there.

There is a shuttle bus. Definitely won't be as time saving a having a private driver/car.

Taroko Gorge can never be done/completed in a day.

This is dated 2016. Pretty sure if you search (enough), you will be able to find current timetable/schedule.

Taking a flight takes 40 mins. Have you buffered in the time to get to Songshan Airport and from Hualien Airport to Taroko Gorge? The express train between Taipei and Hualien takes 2 hours. Alternatively you can spend 2 days/1 night in Hualien.

Thanks dilphinus! Are you implying that it will take more than one day to done/completed Taroko Gorge, assuming i ignore the travelling time.

If the above is true, i will need more than 1 day or at least 2 day if i want to take the shuttle bus, or even a private driver/car.

At the end of the day, i am trying to understand if it make sense to go for the jet plane tour. :)

Do you know what is the Taroko Gorge? Do you want to do all the trails (including those that you need a permit)? Or you just want to touch and go? Touch and go, of cos one day is sufficient. A hike at the Shimen Mt. Trail takes 7-8 hours. A hike along the Shakadang Trail takes 2.5 hours. A 4km round trip at the Baiyang Waterfall Trail takes 1.5 hours. A round trip to the Xiangde temple from Tianxiang takes about an hour.

Have a look a their website

Take into consideration, hotel to Songshan Airport + 40 mins flight + Hualien Airport to Taroko Gorge, total time taken vs taking a train from Taipei to Hualien/Xincheng. Your so call jet plane tour is just a flight from Taipei to Hualien back to Taipei. This can easily be replaced by taking public transport or a private driver/car.

Say, give you 10 hours (8am to 6pm) to do the popular and easier trails and the sights, walk for 10 hours, your body can take it?

I agree with dilphinus. Taroko NP is bigger than Singapore. It take a few days if you want to finish all trails in the Gorge. You may choose one trails and you do't need to finish it all.
For the transportation, you can use combo ticket

How are you going to book cab? By calling? Have you tried flagging a cab at Mount Faber? Taroko Gorge is not a place where cab drivers have nothing to do then go up have a drive around.

There's a timetable/schedule for the shuttle (bus). Use that to plan your route/schedule.

from taipei, you can finish taroko tour in 1 day by train & cab & back to taipei in same day.
take a early train from taipei to 新城, leave at 7.10am, arrive at 9.45am, then hire a cab outside 新城,no need to go down to 花莲 , TWD2000-2500, starts from 10am, you can finish all the tourist spots by 4pm by cab, not rush, with lunch at 天祥。
Take a train back at 4.35pm & reach taipei around 7.15pm.
If need longer time in taroko, there is train at 6.20pm or 7pm+ & reach taipei at 9.30pm. Train ticket is easily available.

Travel 4-5hrs on train and just do taroko, 會不會over 了一點?
Last sentence, i cannot agree with you.

Recommended to stay one night.

Some trails may be close when you are there check at the service centre before going up.
Most popular should he sakadang Changchun shrine yenzikuo and baiyang trail.
If you going solo recommend rent a bike ride up very easy only. If lazy then take bus 250 1 day pass 400 for 2 days but the timing a bit tight.

The bus interval is usually 1h one bus.
Lunch time is no bus.
And i foresee a problem when need to go have a leak.

Machiam war liked that. Go there holidays not run errand. Lol

2 hour transport time, with 6 hours of holiday, this is a very relaxed tour, seem like you do not know much about travelling.
1 day tour is definitely better than stay 1 night or overnight, you just carry a backpack & go, no need to carry the whole lots of luggagae bags, change hotel just for 1 location, then this is really like fight a war & run road like kan cheong spider. Thread starter just want a 1 day trip, not continue from there to taichung or taidong.
Go taroko gorge, no need to go down all the way to 花莲, I give you a tip here, align at 新城, you can save 1-2 hours.
Do some homework, then you can enjoy a holiday much better.
