Agreed. Stay at either end of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, near the 2 important metro stations there. If budget and the metro are not priorities, you can pick Pudong.

Just came back from Shanghai. Stayed at Holiday Inn Downtown located next to Shanghai Railway Station. Most of the train passes through this station. Going in and out of Shanghai by train is very easy but if you were to take taxi during peak period, the rates could be triple the normal rates. Further down the station is Marriott Courtyard.

i stayed at Green Court Serviced Apartments, I thought it was a great location. got family room with 2 beds, washing machine. includes breakfast buffet also.

Can try Charms Hotels at Jiu Jiang Rd, walking distance to Nanjing East Rd and near People's Sq station.
