Hi guys, i just recently joined hardwarezone :)

I will be attending poly soon and would need to purchase a laptop. I would in NYP marketing. But i would also want to do some gaming on my laptop. There would a nyp it fair for students. Here are the models they are selling.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y400
$1,282.00 (w/GST)
Lenovo ThinkPad T430U
$1,477.00 (w/GST)
Lenovo ThinkPad X230
$1,706.00 (w/GST)

HP EliteBook 8000 Series
$1,199.00 (w/GST)
HP Pavilion dv4-5313TX
$1,399.00 (w/GST)
HP Envy m6-1120TX $1,499.00 (w/ GST)

Fujitsu LH 532BNYP
$1,110.66 (w/GST)
Fujitsu SH 782BNYP
$1,998.76 (w/GST)
Fujitsu SH 792BNYP
$2,073.66 (w/GST)

Also, just wondering why Fujitsu is more expensive?
Is it better to buy from the it fair, or buy from outside?

Thanks in advance!:)

Can you list the games that you're going to play? What's your budget? Any laptop's weight, screen size and resolution preferences? Just ignore Fujitsu if you don't want to send it for warranty regularly.

Hi thanks for your reply:)

I play games like League of Legends, RaiderZ , Far Cry 3 and ProtoType 2 etc.
My budget would be around $1100 to $1400. What do mean by sending for warranty regularly? it breaks down often?

I don't have any preferences for size or weight as long its reliable.

Yeah, I got few friends sending their Fujitsu laptop every 3 month for service but still unable to solve the problem. Asus, MSI, Aftershock and Lenovo Thinkpad series are the best in terms of reliability IMO. With your budget, You can get Asus A45VS for $1198. GT 645M should be able to handle Far Cry 3 up to high settings on 1366x768 resolution.

ASUS Notebooks K45VD-VX299H VX300H VX301H VX302H VX303H, K55VD-SX731H SX732H SX733H, A45VS-VX007H, A55VJ-SX118H, Tablet VivoTab Smart ME400C ME400CL 3G IT SHOW 2013 Price List Brochure Flyer Image

Btw the Lenovo Ideapad Y400 is actually very worth it in terms of specs for that price but a lot of people having issue with that laptop and Lenovo service center always no ready parts. You might want to do your own research on it if you really want to buy it. The decision is yours :D

Thanks! Yeah my friend got the lenovo ideapad. He told me it was really good and he was able to play Tomb Raider at max settings. I wanted to get it, but few days back, he upgraded his graphics card drivers and he told he couldnt run max setting anymore. Which made me hesitant about the ideapad.

Btw, my cousin told me to avoid hp as it tend to overheats easily, is it true?

Yeah but I think it only applies to certain model. My classmates who using pavillion dv4 and dv6 2012 model so far no problem though. Max settings for which Tomb Raider? If can max settings for Far Cry 3 and Sleeping Dogs then really powerful, even better if can run on 1920x1080 :D

It will only affects very little... Too bad now PC Dreams no longer have a promotion for MSI GE 60 $1399. MSI gaming laptop has turbo fan, so far I played any high end games like Hitman Absolution, CoD: BO2, Saints Row The Third etc for long hours only reach 67 degrees Celcius. If you care about heat issue, you need to increase your budget or get AFTERSHOCK PC | AFTERSHOCK X11 for $1398. If want i7, bigger HDD, longer warranty etc then need to pay more.

Haha, actually i don't mind paying more if it's worth it. Most of the laptops at the fair are i7 cores. My home desktop (Acer Predator) is i5 core. So will the laptop i7 core have a better performance then my i5 core desktop?

If the i5 is quad core as well, then it will be about the same. i7 for laptop only useful if you're planning to do video editing, 3D modelling, photoshop or heavy RTS games like Starcraft 2 since for laptop only the i7 model has quad core. Other than heavy RTS games, i5 is the best value for gaming.

IMO: i think you should focus more on the GPU rather than the CPU (if gaming is what you are looking for)

Aftershock should be a better investment imo.

My Nephew is also going to NYP, I dun think he needs it for games, just for his poly studies.

I find all the prices quite high on those recommended models. Is it really necessary to get them or I can chose those cheaper models outside? His family is on a budget but do not qualify for loan scheme. Outside got a lot of models below 1k. Those Poly recommended models are all ard 1.5k

Any advice? Thks!

If he doesn't mind to play games on low-med settings, get Asus S46CM for $999 (2 years warranty) else get Aftershock X11 starting from $1358 (base configuration + Windows 7 + 1 year warranty).

Well, for the aftershock if base, would be i5 core, not i7 core. Would it affect gaming performance?

was a NYP DIT student a few years back. During my time, there isnt any advantage in actually purchasing a notebook from school, dont know how is it nowadays.

I got a friend who bought Asus S46cm, looks like it will fit his need for NYP.
