I'm buying quite a few household appliances from the US (110v) and would need a transformer to use it here in SG. Few questions here:

1. Are all transformers made equal or there are differences in the quality?

2. Any recommended brands?

3. If the appliance is rated for 1500w, do I need to overprovision for the transformer, I.e get a 2000w transformer for use with this appliance?

Thanks!

Transformer quality are similar to psu. Efficiency of conversion, parts durability, etc. They all work the same way.

I'd recommend APC but they're rather costly. Have a read around.

It is advisable to have a transformer at least twice the power needed for the application.

thanks for the analogy - much more familiar with PSUs than with transformers.

did a quick check for APC's price and it is indeed really expensive, so much that it outweighs the cost savings I get from importing the appliances.

any other brand that is value-for-money and reliable? I saw quite a few cheap transformers from china but wouldn't want them to explode in my house :s22:

i'm using it for robot cleaner charging/steamers/coffee machines.

Most of the transformers I used are for work therefore can't risk any downtime. The ones I know that are highly reliable are APC and furman through experience.

Ive seen event companies using China transformers on musical instruments like guitar amps and it doesn't seem to give them any issues. At most it's a blown fuse. And these guys went through rough times.
