if you need to cover more physical space, obviously you need either another access point, or a extender.

to try and use 1 wireless router to cover your entire home is foolhardy.

Yes using another AP is a solution too but extra power points required.

Guys, it turned out the AX58U is actually 4x4 MIMO on its 5ghz band (2x2 on 2.4ghz) while the AX88U is 4x4 for both 2.4/5ghz. The reason why is because the 5ghz transmitter for both routers are powered by BCM43684 which is capable of 4x4 ops.

This means that AX58U 5ghz performance is roughly comparable to AX88U, the latter having better CPU and double the RAM. This will translate to better wifi speed when more clients are connected. In summary - if you are not in need for the additional performance (esp in 2.4ghz band) the AX58U makes for a good bargain.

I believe the Asus firmware on AX58U is intentionally coded to mask the higher speed from the 4x4 5ghz radio, when 3x3 or 4x4 connections are established.

To validate this without looking at Asus's marketing materials, a 3x3 or 4x4 AC/AX client is required. One example is Macbook Pro with Touch bar which features a 3x3 radio with 256-QAM support. On a true 2x2 5ghz router, the PHY rate reported by the MBP will be no higher than 866 mbps. However, on my Macbook, i found the highest PHY rate ever reported for AX58U was 1300mbps, which is the max PHY rate for 256-QAM on 3x3 stream.

Anyway the PHY rate are theoritical speed only, but can be used to prove that the AX58U 5ghz radio isnt a 2x2 stream. If anyone (wonder where is @maylyn?) has a 4x4 AC client, they are welcome to try this validation test too :)
