Does anyone have experience in negotiating redundancy package in a MNC?
Any tips on how to negotiate?
If you have spoken to both HR and immediate manager and wants to bring it to higher management, will you talk to the CEO directly? There are about 4 higher managers before the CEO.

What is your position? Managerial or Executive? If managerial, is it junior manager or senior management? I'm guessing it's not a senior management position if so, because you mentioned that there are 4 higher managers before CEO.

In this particular instance, would the CEO bother? If everyone who gets retrenched talks to CEO, his time would be spent on this rather than strategizing the directions of the company (which is really the purpose of his role).

My 2 cents only, might not be worth much. Just do what you want. Anything's worth trying. Never try, never know.

The package should be standard assuming your MNC has a policy in place? They would hardly deviate on that if they do.

May not be really standard.

And the sad thing is, there is no such MOM ruling.

So basically you are screwed. Your Union is of no help.

I know because there are some affected in an MNC.

When I was laid off from credit Suisse in 2014, I was just 1 week short from completing 2 year and 9 months. The rule was 3 weeks salary for every year completed and any partial year less than 9 months don't get anything for that year. If you complete 9 months, you get full 3 weeks for that year.So I requested the HR and my manager to push it by another week and they agreed. So I got 9 weeks salary. I am at the junior most level.

When I was asked to leave when I was pregnant with my second child.... after working for a big private healthcare company for 4 years...they only gave me my maternity benefits as mandated by law...no redundancy package even...

After that I came out to locum and realised I could earn more as a locum..

My high ranking Civil Service friend said I should have complained to MOM but I did not..

I complained to the CEO who is GCT's son that my superior asked if I had no fetal movement when I wanted to take MC for decreased fetal movement?! It signals intrauterine growth retardation and no fetal movement means fetal death...I was quite flabbergasted.

They still wanted me to serve out 1 month. I checked into hospital and took 1 month's hospitalisation leave instead. I had GDM and an early induced labour soon after.

in short, there isn't any legal recourse for you, unless there is a contractual agreement between the employer and employee to pay out retrenchment benefits, or collective agreement between the employer and trade union. retrenchment benefits are not mandatory in law, although there are local market norms. so working in MNC or SME makes no difference.

in your case, unlikely you can negotiate because MNC will usually have their own rates for payment. you can try your luck and ask for more but usually the budget approval phrase would have been long over by the time you received the retrenchment news. furthermore, if the company is very good and pay you everything plus extra or even go above the market norm; retrenchment benefits, annual wage supplement, performance bonus, salary in lieu of notice, en-cashed annual leave, claims and so on, you will hardly have any room for negotiation.

if you are a union member, you can go to your union and see what they say. your profile in terms of tenure and position or even age may have a positive or negative influence on your case. if you have raised your concern with human resource and reporting manager, that is good enough. at the most, you can try highlighting to your reporting manger's boss. suggest you don't jump the gun, efforts will be best spent on searching for the next job instead.

Was just giving the benefit of doubt since he asked, my previous firm did but that was Brit investment bank.

If his firm doesn't pay redundancy its unlikely he will see anything, pay one and everyone will start asking for redundancy :s22:

I don't want to be racist but if you work in a MNC of a particular Asian nationality, then that's it. You are f*cked up.

The western ones are more generous.

Of course you can put on a thick face to ask for more.

No try no potential gain.

Although the definition of MNC can be vague, to me MNC means western and global like Citibank, Barclays, Unilever, Chevron Etc

So Asian MNC somehow seems like an oxymoron, even Japanese I don't consider them MNC like those MUFG, really f*cked up work culture.

So I am curious what you mean by Asian MNC.

An enterprise operating in several countries but managed from one (home) country. Generally, any company or group that derives a quarter of its revenue from operations outside of its home country is considered a multinational corporation.

Obviously, the Asian I am referring to is the root, origin or HQ of the company.

That’s a really, really odd distinction to draw. Here are some unambiguous examples of multi-national corporations (MNCs):

Sony
Samsung
Toyota
Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi (actually an alliance with extensive cross ownership)
Broadcom
Tata
Panasonic
Brother
Honda
LG

Haha no that's a fair assessment, there are exceptions of course but all in all that is the general state of the industry especially in Finance.

Dun say redundancy as the only sore point, I worked for a another bank with European origins but now with Asian work culture (and majority stake ownership) and it was terrible in there.

Salaries and bonus was good but the politics and quest to endlessly work late/on weekend/on mandatory leave just to prove yourself was ridiculous.

I'm actually wondering which nationality you are referring to (so that I know what to avoid in the future).

Not appropriate to mention. But it's not hard to decipher.

Because it's already mixed with the Asian culture. =:p

If a company wants to pay redundancy, they will. Often, the ones made redundant first gets the biggest package. The ones that stayed on until the company closes down will get the least as the company has already run out of monies and therefore shutting down. There is no standard and there is no requirements from MOM that redundancy package is a must nor is there any formula... ultimately it boils down to your relationship with your bosses within the company. I have seen some getting good packages as they are good performers and generally valued. If one has bad attitude and made redundant, he or she may risk getting nothing.

Was the nationality already mentioned in this thread? TBH, I don't have a good opinion of Asia based companies taking care of their employees in the first place.

Because it's already mixed with the Asian culture. =:p

From what I have seen, the origin of the company doesn't matter as much the actual management present in the country. If the management of the local branch primarily consist of locals, it will act like a local company.
