I have not taken these certification, just someone whom is well learnt in Java

If you are already a software developer, or a computer science student with basic to intermediate programming skill set, it is possible to self study. If not, you might find certain concepts on threading and synchronisation harder to grasp.

I don't speak for all, just my own opinion. I don't believe in having a certificate for the sake of having it unless the industry die die have to have one to survive.

I already had a degree and I think it is suffice to say I can get a job with it. What I value more is the knowledge I possess and the amount of experience I have accumulated over the years.

If your objective through this certification is to learn something, take the exam to understand what you know and what you don't know, I would say it's a good exercise. Important is at the end of the day, the process that makes you a better person, not the certificate.

Seriously unless my company is willing to subsides me, I probably find it kinda expensive to pursue one. Besides I have been long enough in this industry, these programming languages certification serve me little purpose. Nonetheless I don't mind going back to university if I can somehow afford it

Yet I don't mind going through the learning process to absorb more knowledge. I like education and I believe it is through constant learning and self exploration that will eventually gain enlightenment in whatever your objective is

but if no money, might as well just go google/library and read up on those

i also want to have CCNA cert, but then it's too expensive

moreover, the stuff I learn at Uni is like a sub-par CCIE standard already

Took the older version (SCJP for Java 5) before, it will help you clear up concepts.
If it is for self-learning, just get a good book and practice the questions, don't waste money to take the exam.
If it is something to differentiate yourself in your resume, go ahead and take the exam. Most people self-study.

Taking this test soon

I had been self studying from SCJP 6 study guide by kathy sierra and bert bates. It is very easy to follow and helpful guide... But this is version 6, altho im not sure what version 7 offers but i think its not much of a diff.. i am jus going to take 6 and move on to others like OCPWCD or OCPBCD etc etc... U cantake test at ntuc (book through pearson vue)

I suggest u jus skip associate, and go straight to OCPJP (since taking this has no pre-requisite ie. u dun need "assoicate" to take "professional") save money too..
