Good day,

I got offered infantry under EOS and was hoping to find out a little bit more before I make a final decision. I tried asking ARC but haven’t been successful.

1) I’m very interested in Army Intelligence (reconnaissance), but failed the interview. So as a regular infantry officer, how likely will I be able to attend recon commander course? Or are scout platoon commanders always filled up by trained recon officers from Army Intelligence?

2) I understand that there are multiple battalions, each specialising in a different area. Do regulars have any say as to whether they want to serve in a motorised/light/island defence battalion? Not specifically the unit itself (i.e. 1 SIR or 9 SIR). Or is it the same-old “up to manpower requirements”?

Thanks in advance!

All up to SAF to put you.

You are only given the option to select your preference. These preferences are all general vocations like infantry etc.

If you are selected to be infantry, its up to SAF to deploy you to which vocation, like armoured infantry etc.

They may not even give you your preferred vocation as well.

What do you mean by “offered”? You applied?

Yup, applied and passed the interview. Okay perhaps “offered” is an inaccurate term since they haven’t put the contract on the table yet, but the next steps for me are submission of personal documents, medical, then signing the contract.

Wanted to ask the questions I had in the OP before I proceeded any further, instead of withdrawing my application late into the entire recruitment process and wasting the organisation’s time.

Why don’t you clarify all these with them?

Trust me, I tried haha. I emailed ARC, got on their live and video chats to ask. All I got was the "visit this link to find out more about Infantry"--which I have already read before and doesn't answer my questions--or them recommending me to sign Military Intelligence instead, which is different from Army Intelligence.

Also, I'm not sure why but I know of a few people who have a recruiter assigned to them and they can ask questions directly, but I never had that direct line of contact unfortunately. 🤷‍♂️

You didn't ask the person who interviewed you?

You didn't ask the person who interviewed you?

Didn't leh.. regret a bit. At that point I was focused on infantry-related questions, like the day-to-day routine of a PC, or the skills and character needed to perform well in the vocation. Never occurred to me a while after the interview that there is a possibility for me to be trained in reconnaissance, even as an infanteer.

Oh well, might wait a while and try re-applying for Army Intelligence again...

Suggest you go tell the ARC people that what they provided is not helpful and because of that you are hesistant about signing on. see what they say.

sometimes people just got to be pushed a bit.

Will do, I'll also continue to ask different people (even tried to message some on LinkedIn) to find out more. Thanks for the advice.
