How old are you?

POSB does offers RSP with a 1% sales charge. You can buy either NIKKO AM STI ETF or the ABF SINGAPORE BOND INDEX.

It's a good start if you does not have much knowledge on investing yet.

If possible, open a scb trading account and buy ES3 yourself regularly, especially now that it's falling hard. You will save alot on the commissions/admin fees.

Both G3B and ES3 are tracking the STI index.

They're two different things. The STI ETF tracks the Straits Times Index (a stock index); the ABF fund tracks a bond index.

Bonds are less volatile than stocks - their price moves around less, and they're less prone to crashes - but the tradeoff is that they generally have a lower yield, and over the long term they make you less money.

So you want to have a majority of your money in stocks - the rule I use is "110 minus your age" should be the percentage of your portfolio that's in stocks - but you do need some money in bonds as well. For example - if you're 30 years old, it makes sense to be 80% in the Nikko STI ETF and 20% in the ABF Bond ETF.

If you need motivation to save 3 to 6 months of salary you can do up a spreadsheet indicating your current gross and net salary and benchmark it against your savings.

Ie 2 months gross salary amt will be close to 3 months net, so motivation to save more to hit the 3 months net mark is there. When you hit 3 months mark, the amount will be close to the 3 months gross mark. So same kind of motivation.

Repeat until you hit your desired 3 or 6 months salary emergency fund.

When i Started .. i did a couple of wrong moves ie. taking up high insurance coverage etc .. and later within the same year i cannot afford to carry on the premiums and resulting cancelling.

later i started to save not with bank but the old tin biscult tin .. save 1 year salary. Saving 6 months salary is the bare minimium only and not too safe IMO.

If i repeat again, I would still save 1 year worth of salary throwing 25% in saving and current, 25% in mid - long term savings and 50% fix deposit and /or time deposits.

Anything more would be into investments ...
