Sadly all the hardcore opposition supporters (the noisy minority of 30%) underestimated what the dead LKY meant to the 40% swing voters.
The new citizen excuse doesn't account for a 10% nation-wide swing to PAP. The hard truth is that our fellow sinkies betrayed the opposition cause. They allowed themselves to get teary-eyed and emotional over the dead LKY who just spent the last 4 years collecting salary without doing anything!
The LKY wave swept aside all the opposition parties and even battered the WP strongholds of Hougang and Aljunied where the WP had previously held large majorities of thousands of votes. Punggol East was simply blasted off the WP's grip by a nomad who was there for barely 2 weeks.
Hate to say this... But there was really nothing WP or the other opposition parties could have done to prevent the loss of Punggol East or the large drop in votes.
It is the trend for ruling parties to win by landslides whenever a popular, nationalistic political leader dies. E.g. India when PM Indira Gandhi was killed. The ruling Congress party swept almost all seats in the subsequent elections and won a supermajority.
How could WP or SDP have negated such a swing? The truth is nothing could be done because our fellow sinkies chose to be emotional and forgot about 6.9 million, CPF, poor transport system etc. in the wake of SG50 and LKY's death. Instead, they voted out of gratitude to LKY and respect for PM Lee who had lost his father.
PAP played the LKY card to the max, broadcasting LKY's proclamation of independence on national day and PM Lee even imitated LKY's lines at the PAP lunch time rally.
Fortunately, LKY can only die once. PAP will soon be lulled into complacency, thinking their 70% win is due to their efforts. PAP lightweights like Lawrence Wong, Lam Pin Min and Chan Chun Sing got lucky. The PAP is in for a rude shock, come the next GE or presidential election when the memory of LKY fades.
