Replacing burnt MOSFET

Then it can be the adapter. You haven't mentioned what adapter it is.

I don't see any form of output protection for that mosfet so a short on the load can kill that mosfet easily. Though I wonder why the external power supply doesn't go into overcurrent protection first.

Ahh nope that broken tip won't kill your PSU board. So something else did. Better find out why before it dies again.

Anyway you can use whatever capacitance you want on that top left capacitor, it didn't cause the MOSFET to blow. Or rather, stick with the same value. Too low will be noisy or maybe PSU become unstable... too high your FSP PSU may not like the inrush current. Then again I've seen T-Amps with 2200uF so a 470uF is a piece of cake for your FSP.

that seems fine. The burnt MOSFET is in the middle of the picture. The one with O3LG silkscreened on it.

I tried to desolder surface mount components before, it's a bitch to remove with one solder gun.

Only manage to remove using 2 solder to melt both sides

It's a bitch to remove. I once killed the LCD monitor controller board.

I think you can find your replacement MOSFET and power adapter at Sim Lim Tower (not SIM LIM SQUARE). As for removing the spoiled part, you can use a soldering iron and sucker to remove the solder.

Don't think it's overheating? perhaps a short? cos they didn't burn after running for a long time. They burnt soon after turning the machine on. I have run one of them for a period of time without incident but the next time I plugged the adapter into it and turned it on, there was smoke.

By turning the machine on, I am guessing you have connected a system to this power supply board?

I am thinking if it could also be the system that you are connecting to (the load) caused an overload on this board and the magic smoke escaped.

Maybe the problem lies with the system you are connecting to?

Well, that may be the case.

But I could run said machine on this PSU, downloading and upgrading from windows 8 to 10 and then playing a movie. Then the next day, this blows on boot up.

So..... unlikely?

Tried to remove surface mounted mosfets before. Totally a bitch to do unless you have the proper equipment. I bought a Hakko-clone with desoldering tool just for this job... ended up the repair didn't work.

Too much trouble imo, plus it's a PSU so I'd recommend not messing around unless the equipment the PSU connects to isn't critical.

Yesterday was Good Friday holiday. Most of the shops should be open today. Bring along your power adapter and Sim Lim Tower is just 5-10 minutes walk from Rochor MRT. If you cannot find in SLT, there is no other place. You should be able to find the replacement unit either at Basement or level 1.

hi since this thread exists : any specific shop @ SLT for soldering job on mobo My SATA port suddenly decided to pop out and after trying to resit it back the hdd is not detected
