if your existing motherboard can post, you can try logging in and retrieve the key and reuse them. when verify with microsoft, just say you replace the motherboard.

Yes all softwares including os are installed in the disk drives eg ssd or hdd. But the os license is tied to the motherboard especially the oem versions.

what i meant by post is that its able to power on and reach to the desktop. you can reuse the product key via retrieving it using a program. however if you have lost it, then the only option is to purchase a new one.

I thought for windows 10, you just need to link your win 10 keys to a microsoft account (such as hotmail), and just login normally even if you change hardware?

It depends whether you are using a Retail key or OEM key.

For Retail key, get back your serial code from packaging if your mobo cannot be booted at all to deactivate the current key on that motherboard before activating on another motherboard, you just contact Microsoft to help you activate on the new motherboard. If you manage to boot, deactivate the current copy on that motherboard, then install and put in your Retail serial code and activate.

If you're using OEM key, it's bound to the motherboard. You have to buy a new key to activate windows on your new mobo.

Suggest you buy a new key ba. Carousell and taobao have plenty of really dirt cheap OEM keys. From about $2 from taobao or about $8-12 on carousell.

If you replace with a same mobo, there's no problem. As mentioned b4, windows now tag the key to the account also. But there's no guarantee you don't need to buy a new key.

nope as long as you use back your old HDD/SSD.i had change a few time already.unless u are are using OEM <like acer>.as for driver the window will auto update.

Non-activated Windows 10 works exactly the same as activated except cannot personalize window background and got watermark at bottom right corner of the screen.

Won't be spammed to get license. So it depends if one can tahan the watermark when watching movies or play games.
