Yes all softwares including os are installed in the disk drives eg ssd or hdd. But the os license is tied to the motherboard especially the oem versions.
I have tried using the same key on a different system and so far it works. when it cant be validated, it will be redirected to microsoft. i mentioned i replaced the motherboard as its defective and it works just fine.
$159 I think? How much is the original keys?
The OS unfortunately is tagged to your motherboard. You change that, then you will need a new license.
But isn't it unfair if MB died and u do a replacement of MB, OS shld allow u to re install

It will show as not activated. In this case, there is a good chance you will not be able to get updates after the "trial" period and will be prompted constantly to get a license.
