Hi all,

I am currently using HP-slimline 5600 (i5 3.3ghz, Radeon 5450, 6gb ram) already discontinued model in the market. Usage: Mainly for gaming and light photoshop editing. Current pc unable to support newer games like GTA 5 and witcher 3.

Few questions:

1) Should I upgrade my pc at this period?
2) If so, should I go for Z97 or X99 build? (would like it to last a while before the next upgrade)
3) Recommend a build (budget 1500 to 2500 max, no need kb/mouse and monitor)

Thank you for any advice and sorry for newbieness.

1) wait for skylake? But performance close to haswell.

2) what features in z97/x99 you looking out for?

3) what do you use your PC for?

1) Your budget inclusive of monitor and mouse/kb etc? Please specify
2) If gaming don't need X99. X99 will cost you way more than what your budget can cater to.
3) Z97 chipset is only if you intend to overclock your CPU or you intend to do a SLI. Again, your budget might be a limitation if you require to add in monitors and mouse/kb etc.

Thank you all for fast response.

Main usage for gaming. But I do not want to build a pc and end up that I have to change soon (was looking at X99 as it would be on the newer DDR4 with present DDR 3 may phase out eventually. Would like to try overclocking thou I am new. Intend to do 2/3 way SLI for a start as GPU are not that cheap.

Will reuse kb/mouse and monitor.

You don't need a z97 chip set to do oc but then they have better power delivery (as advertised). OC also has minimal gains for gaming.

DDR4 has minimal gains over DDR3. and the new skylake platform should support both ddr3 and 4 but your choice to choose x99 over the consumer chipset.

Why do you want to intend to 2-3 way sli despite knowing that GPU is expensive hahaha :s22: and what is your resolution?

Perhaps SLI for future usage when GPU dips in price. But like mentioned my current pc doesnt run newer games, and doesnt seem to have the upgrade option. U wanna suggest a build without overclocking as its not needed that could last a good..say 3years? and yet support the latest games. Thanks for your quick reply.

Future proofing is a losing game in pc upgrading.

Your intention to sli in the future when price dips. Let me put it this way. Do you intend to purchase 2 or 3 gtx 970 3 years from now? Or do you rather get a good updated card within that time?

I would say buy what you need now if you cannot wait. Don't buy what you think you need 2 years from now. Cuz by then what you bought today is already obsolete.

Latest game in 3 years? Might be a total different story. 3 years later 6GB VRAM would probably be the mainstream. Future proofing is difficult, well maybe if you dump money into Titan series SLI then we can talk about proofing for a bit. $1.5k-2.5k budget? Don't talk about it. It will be playing smart and upgrading parts as and when it requires.

For now:

CPU: ASRock H97 PRO4 + i5-4690 (top i5 non K processor, you shouldn't be bottlenecked by this any soon) @ $411

GPU: From the cheapest Zotac AMP! GTX980 @ $760 to ASUS Strix GTX980 @ $865.

RAM: G.Skill RipJaws-X 1600MHz 8GB @ $114

SSD: Samsung EVO 850 250GB @ $175

HDD: WD Blue 1TB @ $72

PSU: PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 550W @ $125

Costs without casing: $165X-$176X

Pick any casing you like and you should be still under $1900 after asking discount. This should allow you to play all current games at 1080p and also next gen games at 1080p too. 2 generations later, no one know what the game will demand.

the games u mentioned are gpu cpu intensive rather than anything to do with the mobo unless u need some of the features. most boards can overclock and the current ones won't last any longer or shorter than Z97. needs wise u don't seem to need z series. but of cos, go with something u like, even if u don't need.

For eg, i like how mobos look in atx cases. i may buy one soon. currently on m atx. and lo and behold, i only have 2 hard drives. seriously overkill man.
