Request For Help Regarding University Admissions

Hi all, I've just taken my A Level results (2014 A Levels Batch) from my school and was wondering if anyone out there with similar experiences/relevant knowledge of this field could help me out, many thanks in advance.

Here's my results (I know it's a bit screwed up.) :
Economics H1 : D
Project Work H1 : A
Higher Mother Tongue (Chinese) H1 : A
General Paper : E
China Studies in Chinese H2 : B
Physics H2 : D
Mathematics H2 : D

The catch is that my forte lies in interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, and these characteristics are written down black and white on my testimonial, with my various CCA contributions and CIP hours (162 hours) both down on documented evidence. I've also got a very strong foundation in music, playing 7 instruments and obtaining grades in 3 of them (6 in Piano, 7 and 6 in Chinese traditional instruments).

The courses that are ideal to me are:
NUS Psychology
NTU Psychology
Any courses related to marketing (Those that involve creating advertisements for products etc, creativity based.)

Of course any information regarding other courses that I can get in would be very much appreciated (Very strong preference for local universities).

Please do reply and any comments regarding retake or not having worked hard enough would be in vain because personally I don't plan to retake (Not enough time to burn) and I do sincerely know my weakness and have had it much regretted for a very long period of time. To be honest, I'm basically hoping for a second chance on improving the academic part of my life.

If Chinese language and culture is your favourite, you may want to consider UNISIM's BA in Chinese Language and Literature.

Your GP and Econs are pulling you down, assuming you are heading for psychology, but no harm giving it a try to apply.

With your results, it might be difficult for you to get into psychology in either of the schools. Frankly speaking, 162hrs of cip isn't a lot.
However, you should be able to get into ntu engineering easily, and you can always do marketing as a career with an engineering cert.

NONO, with TS grades and interest, telling TS to go engineering is just torturing him. Try NTU or NUS psych using your CCA and try to get a few teachers to write favorable testimonial for you. Don't go in to a course simply because you want to go uni.

1. I did more CIP hours than you, I clocked around 300+ and never even got an interview for CCA based admissions. So your 162 is unimpressive.

2. Lets face abit of reality here, NUS psych is not going to take you in. Neither is NTU psych. Have you seen the 10th percentile IGP for those courses?

3. Maybe you can try ADM since you say you are creative? Any portfolio to back that claim?

4. I settled for engineering in local uni because my grades were **** too. Did I survive? No. But i did get to transfer to a humanities course that I wanted in the end through alot of work. You can PM me if you want more info though.

Its up to TS to decide whats more important, getting into your course of choice or school or choice. Favorable testimonials and all are pretty much useless. Although there are discretionary admissions, those are given to applicants who are pretty much borderline cases...

So you are of the opinion of getting a uni seat regardless of interest? Yes you go to the course of your choice despite choosing engineering first, but how many did it? On the issue of DA, I know of people which score way off the IGP and got in through very favorable testimonial and some outstanding achievement. Considering the fact TS is likely to be a guy and likely to be serving NS. Better to apply to the course of his ideals first before considering the switching course path.

PS: On a side note, I know of many people with little interesting in Engineering dying in the course now simply because they wanted a Uni spot...

like I said, its about what a person wants. Even if a person is dying in engineering, he might prefer that over going to SIM or Kaplan.

Yeah, I know people who got into NUS Biz through DA. Comparatively, NUS Biz needs an AAA/A while my friend only got a BBB/B. Points wise, its quite far, but taken in the absolute, a BBB/B would have allowed my friend into NUS anyway, just a different course, and a BBB/B is not a bad set of grades. But between NUS Nursing (CCC/B) and a person who got a DDD/C, the point difference would be exactly the same as in the first case, but he would still not get in through DA because a DDD/C is a terrible set of grades and he would not be in NUS in any other course. So point difference is not all that matters.

Actually, so far I've known 3 including me, but I'm sure there are more out there. All you need to do is score well(A, A-) in the faculty's modules where you intend to transfer to. And if you cant, maybe you aren't that cut out for that major.

If said person has NS, then yeah, he can choose to try his luck for the first application.

You can try Unisim fulltime marketing or human resource since you mentioned about people skills. You'll have to rely on your chances for the interview selection, and the rest is up to you.

After much thinking and sorting out my options, I've basically got the following options (In order of preference) :

1. NUS/NTU Psychology through DA.
2. SUTD Courses through results (DA if not enough).
3. Engineering.
4. NAFA/LASALLE.
5. Chinese Universities.
6. Not going to University.

I'm hoping that you guys could shed some light and opinions on which one should I take and how should I go about preparing for it (I'll definitely do my 110%).

Sorry to break it to you bro, but with your set of results it is highly unlikely that you will be able to gain admission into your desired courses (Psychology & Marketing) through the normal route. The courses you might stand a chance for would be those such as Applied Physics or Electrical Engineering but since they do not fall within your interests, I advice you not to even consider them. I recommend that you immediately try for DA and consider other uni alternatives such as SIM/SUTD.

1. Eliminate all those you're not interested in
2. Apply for all the rest in that particular order
3. Consider private degrees

Lol. SIM and SUTD are not on par. In fact, SUTD is harder to get into than NTU engineering courses.

Agree, the application process for SUTD is much more stringent than that of NTU Engineering. I got an offer from SUTD before. In order to get in, you need to pass the interview and present a product to the interviewers on the spot. They will only give you 5 mins to prepare for the presentation...

What kind of special accomplishments do you have that qualifies you for discretionary admission?

I quote NTU's version of "accomplishments" here,
- Winner at the International Olympiads or in the National Science & Talent Search.
- Represented Singapore in Arts and/or Sports such as Olympics, SEA/ASEAN/ASIAN games, etc.
- Active involvement/participation in community services and/or volunteering work. (This don't mean CIP, it means being a leading volunteer in NGOs/VWOs.)
- Demonstrated excellence in areas such as leadership, entrepreneurship, arts & culture, sports, etc.
