retaking a levels in ns

Done it before. If you are in a vocation which gives you alot of free time, you can do it. But end of the day, you must have the motivation and discipline to study every single day.

Just ask yourself what you want after NS? Private uni or local uni or enter worklife. I think you find your answer.

Retake as Private Candidate in NS can be done... normally during exam period boss (good boss) will let you off with blessings...

Time Management wise... If in combat vocation hard.. but have seen it being done the guy study at night. Clerical vocation easier... free time in office/store/at night can study little by little.

I would rather you not put yourself through the same misery twice and try to look for a part time degree/diploma in a reputable school (e.g. ngee ann adelaide which offers a bachelor of innovation that is underrated). Think about it. With a degree/diploma, at least once you're done with NS, you will have something to fall back on...as opposed to an A-levels that might go sideways again. You already know you didn't do very well in the A-levels without any further commitments. Why repeat the same thing only now with MORE commitments. The road to uni is not only via a-levels. Don't let the talk get to your head and screw up your NS as well while you are at it.

I have seen 3 friends whom did it before, but it was really tough for them. Above all, you must be willing to sacrifice away some of your personal time away for this.

hey. I retook my a lvls last year in army and did quite ok this time round. I got rejected by NUS NTU SMU for last two years. But this time round I can get in NUS w/o any problem. Pm me if you need help on how to manage your studies in your unit. If you are really determined to do it, trust me you can make it. Even if you don't improve by a lot, it is an enlightening journey for you to go through. Goodluck

It can be really tough as need to have alot of self-discipline. Depending on your load during NS, it can be better to do it when in service than when outside.

u need to be VERY discipline.

Having been through the syllabus once, you should know how rigid it is. Recall the first time u took A levels, you didn't make it WITHOUT EXTERNAL OBLIGATIONS (i need to emphasize this point) and if you think that you can do it WITH NS, it would be crazy.

YOU HAVE TO STUDY CRAZY, CATCH UP CRAZY and FOCUS if you really want it.
ASK YOURSELF, what would you GIVE UP for good grades, HOW much would you put in to get those grades and ARE u willing to sacrifice personal time to study.

Better think hard, because there are some who do concurrent NS and Alevels did not do well too because they lack strict discipline. If u think you can do it, GO FOR IT.

How about don't redo it?
I mean I don't know anybody who likes to study stuff that has got no real life relevance, much less twice. If my maths serves me right (which is highly unlikely since I had to retake it, and given the benefit of hindsight, choose not to), being the 50th percentile means you right smacked boderline passed everything. So what makes you think you can do so so much better the second time around?

1. If your parents are rich, go overseas and do a bridging programme.
2. If your parents are not rich, look for some reputable local PEI (e.g. ngee ann adelaide), do a term of modules here, work, save and transfer to a local uni and/or on shore.

Re-taking the A-levels is just that. Re-taking. You don't control how well next years field does nor do you have any control over the number of re-applicants. I only live once and I say, if the **** does not work, try something else.

TS, if u haev plans to further overseas then, dun waste time doing A levels. go str8 to grab credits online for US universities. for details u can pm nvyrem

NTU/NUS bo bian u hv to retake As but which major u r interested in? so much so that if u retake, it will secure u a place?

other uni's, i think jus take Dip. cos one day if u r jobless, u always hv dip to fall back on even if u fail getting a job in degree

if u r good & passionate in what u major in, even dip can get a place in ntu/nus. thsi may not be true for x/y gen but it is not the case anymore for ur generation. my sibling yaya papaya for O's anyhow enter poly with 20 + points. and grad from local uni jus recently w honors. FYI his english is cui sai, his math is KNS, but he did it w real hardwork. if u hv what it takes to make it happen, it will happen

My story

I took A levels in NS. Nope, not retake, I took it for the first time in NS. It was one of the toughest period of my life and i want to share my story. Hope it can motivate you guys who are thinking of taking/retaking A levels in NS.

Back in secondary school, I was a really rebellious kid. I am unable to recall the specifics but I do remember being caned for getting into a fight with one of the school staff, getting suspended from school for refusing to cut my hair and failing every single subjects in my ‘O’ level preliminary examinations. It was a miracle that I managed to make it into a polytechnic. If you think that I would work hard in polytechnic, you are gravely mistaken. I flunked my exams and dashed all hopes of making it into university. During the third semester of study, I scored a humiliating GPA of 1.9/4. And in the fourth semester, I went into the dean’s office and withdrew from the school.

After dropping out, I went on to do odd jobs. I was an ice-cream salesman one day and an air-con repairman the next. It was between these odd jobs that I realised the importance of education. This was what I learnt: No one will take a drop out seriously. Heck, no one even believes anything you say. Education is not just about the “paper”, it is about proving to others that you are able to grit your teeth and persevere when the going gets tough.

I took the ‘A’ levels in National Service without going for classes. I obtained notes and textbooks from my friends and tried to assimilate whatever information I had at hand. It was really tough but I was not going to quit, not again. I told myself that if I pressed on, everything else will fall in place. I gave up my social life and studied at the library till closing EVERYDAY. I was lucky to get a 9-6 posting so i was able to find some time to study after work. Many people discouraged me. I was called crazy, stupid, naive, failure etc. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. Believe in yourself and you will be surprised at what you can do! YOUR HARD WORK WILL PAY OFF!

And it did happen, i scored AAB/A and was accepted into NUS and SMU this year!

That sounds amazing! When did you start preparing for your a level that year! How did you deal with the SPA component?
