Someone I know is going down this route, he did A's in JC but results wasn't fantastic and couldn't enter his courses of choice in NUS/NTU. Has 'easy' job in army, but has several private tutors every weekend and tons of study material to work through, and otherwise no social life. Guess you really need the discipline/determination to be able to improve on your results. And you really need to start preparing as soon as you decide to retake.

I have a JC friend who got accepted into NUS science but is retaking this year while in NS, cos he wants to get into medicine/pharm i think. His hours are regular, so he sacrifices time in the evenings/weekends to study. He's the super ambitious kind, like when he got B3 for O level chinese, he retook until he got A1. I'd say it's definitely possible provided you are self-disciplined and conscientious, so don't be too disheartened. If you do retake, remember to come up with a revision schedule, take breaks and get enough sleep!

"I was in a very desperate situation; if yours is not as desperate results may differ if intensity of discipline is not there".

You can do it because of your circumstances does not equate to blur sotong on here who knows the difference to adopt only where applicable.

Either that, or some people might actually want to have a life not stuck in the cycle of fail, retake, and failing again.

I flunked my exams and dashed all hopes of making it into university. During the third semester of study, I scored a humiliating GPA of 1.9/4. And in the fourth semester, I went into the dean’s office and withdrew from the school.

After dropping out, I went on to do odd jobs. I was an ice-cream salesman one day and an air-con repairman the next. It was between these odd jobs that I realised the importance of education. This was what I learnt: No one will take a drop out seriously. Heck, no one even believes anything you say. Education is not just about the “paper”, it is about proving to others that you are able to grit your teeth and persevere when the going gets tough.

I wish to clarify that A Level is extremely rigorous (his grades are as if he scored 7A1s for his O Levels by self-studying). If you think you are that motivated and smart, you can do the same.

Doing A Level for the first time alone (especially in NS) - i can gurantee you would need 2 or more years to complete. Also, if you are planning to sit for science papers, you will face a hard time doing your practicals.

1yr 2 months is a very long time. study smart and hard. how to study smart? well? do you understand what you're reading? can you explain the concept to anyone without looking at a book? if people ask you to clarify what you've explained can you answer?

this is not true. as long as you can understand what you read, you would not need more than 2 years. most of the concepts are added on from what you've learnt in o level.
