Retrieving data from spoiled HDD

Asking for a friend. His laptop (2.5") HDD is spoiled. Not detectable in BIOS or through external enclosure. Sounds like it is far gone.

He says one shop in SLS says $50 to diagnose plus $300 to $1500 to retrieve data.

Is this is a reasonable rate? If not where can he go for help?

Data recovery is pretty much an expensive one. Depends on how impt is his data. If he's data still can replicate okay if not den is he willing to take the high price?

That's why, it is always a must reminder to ownself that u should have a few backups for itm

Agreed that backups is always important. I personally make sure to backup twice - into secondary internal HDD and in off-site external HDD. Can't be too careful.

Unfortunately he assumed that since it was a new laptop and HDD it would not fail, and he says he did not take normal precautions.
