Are laptop DVD drives standard size components that can be reused and installed in another laptop model/brand?

Or are they uniquely customised to fit the drive bay and SATA connector position of the laptop model it is meant for?

My acer laptop has a DVD drive with the slimeline SATA connector. It can be used on most USB devices with a USB to slimline SATA cable

(?) for being able to be reused for other laptops of different makes - even if able, you might have to remove its outer shroud (the housing portion) - as it might not conform with the dimensions of the replacement laptop.

From experience, It is known to work within the same brand / series like the HP Elitebook series.

Most dvd drives are sata based. That would allow for an adapter to be used sata to USB for instance for interfacing.
