Right time to upgrade to Ryzen?

Hey guys, I need your opinions, my rig is listed on the right side. Been running this CPU+Mobo for about 4 years. The last upgrade I did was adding a 1070.

Now since Ryzen is out, should I upgrade is the question. I used to game a lot but nowadays I don't play games as much. In my free time I do some video editing on Premiere and editing images in Lightroom. Editing 4K videos with my current setup is painfully slow. So I am wondering if going for Ryzen 1700 would be a good choice?

I have been using Ryzen for 3 weeks and it has been a roller coaster ride.
Happy with the performance.

I have upgraded from previous i5-4670k overclocked at 4.5ghz. It ran fine for some gaming and some lightroom work but MB died so jumped onto Ryzen bandwagon.

I have overclocked it to 3.9ghz for Ryzen 1700X. Specs on the right.
I have recently swithed to 2933mhz ram from previous 2400mhz ram and can see the PC to be much snappier.

I have been using my rig for gaming and a lot of Lightroom processing of 36 MP RAWs from Nikon D800. I find the experience to be faster as I have added an NVMe drive which I put as cache and temp storage for new RAW files while I work on them. Loading times seems to be faster due to the NVMe. So storage is also an important factor.

The big difference is when exporting the photos to JPEG with a bit of sharpening mask and a lot of effects applied to the photos. It is so much quicker when all 8 core 16 threads works together. Lightroom don't seem to use too many cores when doing normal adjustments so i don't see any difference with previous i5 system.

There's a review here from pugetsystems[link] where they tested many processors and for your case, you might want to consider i7-7700K as it is much faster in everything else except exporting.

I would suggest tong until 2018.
Wait for Intel Counterattack and 2nd Gen of Ryzen.
Ryzen just came out and lack optimization.
Give them 1 year and then review and compare again.

I feel the likes of Ryzen will benefit your usage. It is not well optimised since its still in a very early stage, but we can already clearly see that the increased core count is beneficial for things CPU intensive applications like video editing. Intel's quad core's strength is in gaming due to the clockspeed, but you can't compensate the difference in core count with increased clockspeed in CPU intensive applications. Perhaps you can consider an 1700 or 1600.

For benchmarks you can easily check reviews to see how it compares to Intel at similar price points for productivity applications. Of course, to take advantage of the extra cores, you have check if your applications scale with number of cores.

But the question is " Do you need it now ? "

If yes, then answer is a no brainer.

How you know that ram support to 3600 on ryzen haha. Heard ryzen very particular abt ram something abt double side and one side Samsung b etc. All the mb recomendation like 8x2 kit rather then 16x2

3600mhz C16 and 3200mhz C14 is the same chip for trident Z and already many verified that it's Samsung B die. So I'm pretty certain it will be fine as long as the motherboard bios is updated to the latest iteration.

Yup, took the plunge and upgraded, so far I'm loving it, I can watch twitch streams while playing games smoothly and doing some rendering and exporting in Premier is much faster than my old system. My old system would lag when I'm rendering or exporting, no issues on the Ryzen. Definitely no regrets in getting Ryzen

Can test some blender gpu compute vs cpu compute, compare the difference?
Also do you happens to have gimp or Photoshop? How it feels compare to your old system?
