Khalil Fong, Who Died At 41, Didn't Smoke Or Drink Alcohol; Only Vice Was Working Late Nights

News of Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong's sudden passing at the age of 41 sent shockwaves across the globe over the weekend.

Fu Music, the label founded by Khalil, announced on Weibo on March 1 that the star died peacefully on February 21 after "facing a disease with a positive attitude for five years".

They did not specify what the illness was.

His body was reportedly cremated in Dali, Yunnan on March 1.

It was later revealed that Khalil suffered pneumothorax 14 years ago and was hospitalised several times.

Pneumothorax occurs when air gets inside one's chest cavity and creates pressure against one's lungs, causing it to collapse.

The star was said to still be receiving treatment for the illness in recent years. His manager also divulged in July last year that Khalil was plagued by health problems involving his lungs but was on the road to recovery.

Reports claimed that there was no specific cause for his death and that it was an accumulation of various health issues he had experienced since entering showbiz.

According to reports, Khalil, who was born in Hawaii, was always health conscious before his passing.

He was a vegetarian, did not smoke or drink alcohol, carbonated drinks or coffee.

His only vice was, however, always staying up late to work.

It was said that Khalil loved music so much he often forgot about the time once he started working. He would hustle for 18 hours straight every day when he worked on an album.

His workaholic nature made him very skinny, and he reportedly weighed only 50kg. He was 172cm.

"I know working overnight is bad for the liver, but overseas stars can release an album once every two-and-a-half years, we need to make one every year. If we want to make an album of the same quality as theirs, we need to reduce the turnover time," he once said.

The 2017 Golden Melody Awards Best Mandarin Male Singer made his debut with his album Soulboy in November 2005.

He was best known for hit songs such as 'Love Love Love' (2006), 'Singalongsong' (2008) and 'Tour For Three' (2008).

His last album was 2024's The Dreamer.

Many of Khalil's showbiz pals, such as JJ Lin, Wang Leehom and Jam Hsiao, have paid tribute to the star on their socials.

David Tao performed Khalil's 'Love Love Love' in his memory during his recent concert while G.E.M broke down in tears while remembering Khalil at her Singapore concert last weekend.
