Today i.e. 24 October is United Nations Day.

I am awake early, went downstairs to a 24/7 Coffee Bean joint to have an early breakfast, and am back home in front of my workstation checking my LinkedIn feed for interesting things that might catch my fancy.

Not that long ago, I received a t-shirt with the United Nations logo printed on the front, it was a token of appreciation and I very gladly accepted it. To be frank, I didn't do much when I was assigned to UN to help out as an online contributor. I was pretty much an observer whose job was to read postings by UN participants from around the world, and my job was to respond encouragingly and advocate for the values of the UN regime.

I still have four more years to go before my due diligence is up. My role in UN is voluntary in nature and I'm neither authorised by the Singapore Government nor do I receive a paid salary from UN for my involvement. It's just something that I wanted and aspired to do since I was a teenager i.e. I always believed in the UN mission since I was in junior college, and I wanted to be part of a system whose purpose is to bring about lasting peace and global solidarity. So when I was given the chance to enrol in the various UN institutions, I took up the bait and went for them.

Time flies, it has been eight years since I joined UN. All these years when I'm on board the UN project, not a single day went past did I ever go hungry or thirsty or was subject to absolute poverty, and I am grateful to the Singapore PAP Government for constantly working with the UN to advance the Sustainable Development Goals as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

To be honest, it's because of my stint at the various UN agencies that's why I ended up having plenty of faith in the Singapore government. When I mingle with all kinds of nationalities in the UN ecosystem, there is so much cosmic bullsh1t in those developing and even developed countries, I count my lucky stars that here in Singapore we have a stable and reliable one-party dominant political system which is still reasonably democratic and meritocratic in nature.

Take this morning for instance, I am up and running early, and I had the liberty of going for a nice breakfast with a nice cup of beverage which costs me around S$20 which is still affordable for me my any means. I'm not too impoverished, and there is ample security and safety in the neighbourhood so that I don't need to worry about going outdoors before the sun rises. By now as I come back home, the first public buses are running and there are other folks in my neighbourhood who are already at the busstop waiting for the first bus; whether are we talking about public transport or energy resources which powers our buses, everything runs pretty fine.

There's so many things I can be grateful for, I just wish to express my appreciation for everything that goes right instead of whining over what might go wrong. I am not a political scientist or a politician, I am just an ordinary bloke who believes in happiness and I feel that there are so many blessings in life which we should be gladdened about.

This message is also sent to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Minister in charge i.e. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

Cheerio!
