RMA mobo

Just asked a store at SLS to help me send back my mobo for RMA. Can I still use my old OEM windows when they repair it? Thanks. Don't wish to use windows 8

Q. Can a PC with an OEM Windows operating system have its motherboard upgraded and keep the same license? What if it was replaced because it was defective?

A. Generally, an end user can upgrade or replace all of the hardware components on a computer—except the motherboard—and still retain the license for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created. Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred to the new computer, and the license of new operating system software is required. If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do not need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC as long as the replacement motherboard is the same make/model or the same manufacturer's replacement/equivalent, as defined by the manufacturer's warranty.

Why cant use old windows?

You can use it. So long as the mobo is the same mobo model. Even if you do not want to use windows 8. You still can get the windows 7 oem that is sold every stores in sls.

In TS case, his old OEM windows license might have used for another PC with another mobo already. So it's locked/bound to his previous PC config already in a legal sense.

I believe for his case, his current mobo broke down. So he took it out sent in for RMA, and swapped in with another old temporary mobo found lying somewhere in his storeroom. It is most probably of a different brand or model salvaged from another PC elsewhere.

If it is a full retail box Windows license, then no problem with mobo restrictions so long as it stays on 1 PC. OEM license comes with additional restrictions. This is what I understand.

Its fine. You can send in for rma. Once the board is back you can reuse your oem windows again. If you run into activation issues, call up microsoft for the activation code. Tell them your mobo uplorry. They will give you a key number to activate your windows again.

Normally should not have activation issues unless you change the entire mobo to another brand or model.

If they return you the same mobo, or a mobo of the same model, this is absolutely fine.

I got the wrong impression you are trying to use another stand-in mobo in the meantime while your spoilt board is being RMAed. Sorry for the confusion.

On another side note, what if i replaced my current nehalem system to haswell? Currently running dual boot win7 and win8. The win8 is the upgrade version. Will the same keys work?
