Different generation of Tensor Cores. The Ampere Tensor cores are supposedly 2x more performant than Turing.

Big Navi will actually have a chance here.... 15% at 100% more money means that for most part, it will be the rtx 3080/3070 vs Whatever Radeon 6000 series in the market.

After all, the rumors point to Big Navi being competitive with the RTX 3080.

While this is the fastest card one can get right now, I feel the interest level isn't high purely because people already kind of have an expectation of how fast this will be over the RTX 3080. And indeed, no surprises when reviews started to appear. What comes as a surprise to me is how much power the card requires. In the case of an Asus Strix review, the card potentially draws close to 450W when running Furmark. In most gaming load, its in the 370W range. For those who game without AC on, either make sure your room is very well ventilated or be ready to sweat in a sauna room.

Put the PC near your window. And point a fan to blow the exhaust of the PC's fans out of the window instead of at yourself.

I already figured this would happen about 10 years ago. Those solutions where the PC is placed below the desk are no longer feasible as you will roast your legs.

I think the whole '8K gaming' hype has gotten to everyone, including those posting in the 3090 threads.

As Nvidia alluded to in their presentation slides, the flagship is RTX 3080, period.

RTX 3090 is targeted at a different segment of users:

1. Gamers that have 8K TV screens.
Quick check on Courts Website, the cheapest 8K TV costs S$6299 before promotion. People buying those kind of screens for gaming should have no issue ponying up the money for the RTX 3090. The probability of such gamers will be less than the probability of 8K TV ownership in the first place.

2. 3D Content creators
Animators, 3D VFX artists, etc. People that would traditionally depend on Quadros for their workload. RTX 3090 is sure cheaper than a Quadro RTX 6000. Even 3090 reviewers have already emphasized this point over and over again. Getting a 3090 over a Quadro merely loses certification, something that some content creators can do without.

3. AI/Machine Learning users
24GB VRAM. Something that used to appear only in the S$3700 RTX Titan. This 3090 is easily at least S$1000 cheaper and can load the same training datasets into VRAM. What is missing is probably the Titan drivers. But then, different training datasets may require different compute power, so mileage may vary.

4. Gamers on 4K/120Hz or 4K/144Hz screens
Next-tier performance over the 3080, with a huge price tag. More justified for multi-generational GPU upgrade (e.g. Maxwell or Pascal to Ampere). I'm still using my 980Ti on a 4K/120Hz panel (Acer XB273K), so I understand how it feels to be limited to only 4K/60Hz (DP1.2 limitation) when the panel can offer much more. Even then, upgrading to 3090 is a tough sell from a value perspective coz the 3080 will still be a more price-to-performance upgrade.


5. Users with loads of money
This one cannot be framed into a value proposition. Some just have too much, so no logic works.


For all other users, the RTX 3080 is a far better buy than an RTX 3090 for gaming at resolutions 4K and below. For those sitting on the fence on whether to buy the RTX 3090 or not, here's a litmus test: if buying an RTX Titan is not an issue, then buying an RTX 3090 shouldn't be either.

I would like to see how anyone can play their games at 8k at the moment. Even Linus didn't have a solution to do that and was shipped a TV for it.

I agree with all of what you have written. Let's put it in the way I would advise, buy the RTX3080 now and buy the next x080 card next year which will be more powerful than the RTX 3090 anyway.

Overall, it'll cost the same and maybe. Just maybe you can get an 8k monitor or TV next year

It not a hype, as it's ready products in the market. It's only a matter of time the price drop and become popular in a few years time.
So, a more appropriate term is "trend"...
