Ryzen didn't post - indicators dram error

Build a ryzen pc yesterday but after powering up, it did not seem to have any respond. I was told ryzen takes a while for the 1st bootup and waited for more than 10mins but did not seem to respond. The motherboard indicators there is a ram issue, but after trying out all 4 pieces of ram individually, it still the same. Have tried to run it without ram and it seems to be the same as well.

Can a motherboard go to bios without ram installed? My components are as follows;
Ryzen 1700x
Asus x370 strix F gaming
4x 8gb corsair vengeance led 3000mhz
Sapphire 7950 (reuse from old rig)
Seasonic G550 (reuse)

I put back my old system and there should be no issue with my gpu or psu since its able to go bios

try with the memok button. it will reboot a few times and the led will blink from fast to slow and steady and finally gone. hope this helps.. unless super suay that the mobo is gone.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried clr cmos once but did not seem to change. The led is a solid on. Will try a few more times when i get home. Unfortunately the cpu, mobo and ram are all from US. I don't think the local distro will entertain me. Sending it back will be a headache

im also aware that not all memory frequency is accepted by ryzen. maybe you might have to lower it down. i might be incorrect here.. hope the other ryzen users can advise you.

Dont enable xmp.
Manually key in the ram frequency and timings.
Try 2933

Try to update the bios using thumbdrive and press the bios button at the back of the casing for a few second without powering up the system. May need to flash 2 times. After all is done, power up the system to see if it works.

You can try borrowing a stick of DDR4 RAM to test on your system to see whether it boots up. Test everything at stock speed first.

If not able to borrow, then you can bring down your system for troubleshooting to Nigel at PC Care & Solution, Sim Lim Square #02-32. They don't charge for it but it will be good if you can give them a small token of appreciation.

i too own a Ryzen system:
1) Ryzen 7 1700x
2) 4 x 8G Geil white Dragon running at XMP settings (2993MHz at CL16)
3)Asrock taichi MB
4) MSI Core Frozr L CPU Cooler (running at 38-50C at room temp)

if u have updated to the latest bios, u shld be able to safely run the ram speeds at the XMP profile.

Anyway, even if u have the ram speed set too high, the system shld auto-reboot and run at a safe but slow speed.

My suggestion - use a thumbdrive and update to the latest bios first.

make sure the ram is fully pushed in inside the slot, esp the side w/o clip

What cooler are u using?

Ensure that you do not over tighten the cooler.

Make sure your rams are in the correct boot slot.
(dimms 2/4 or A2/B2)
Boot up, then flash bios.
Everything solved.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Never heard of nigel before, will check it out. The most important thing is to get hold of a stick of ram that will enable it to bootup. Right now, can't get to bios. I don't think there's any option for me to update bios without booting up

Read the manual. Find a piece of ram that is under the "tested to be compatible" ram list. Some motherboards don't like some rams. U c my nick? I been there, done that. Now EhSaiBoot liao

Vengeance LED will definitely work at default settings (i.e. without enabling XMP or changing any RAM settings) with Ryzen and with the Asus board. The issue here is definitely not incompatibility.

One or more parts is DOA, most likely the board, could be the RAM, or perhaps even the CPU. In rare situations when the IMC is dead, the board will give you a DRAM-related POST error code.

The ram is not listed in the qvl list, but the last time it was updated seems to be in may and that bios update has increase compatibility, esp I heard in the patch in jul/aug. The reviews I see on amazon seems to be ok with ryzen, as does parts picker. It may be I got an old board and lack the bios that's able to run it. Heck, I got the ram in early aug expecting to get TR (hence the 4 ram kit) but scale back after the pricing was higher than what I wanted.

You can try a few things first.

- let us know what cooler are you using. I ran into problems before during am3 days where cooler were over tightened till the extent where i cant even boot with 4 sticks or ram or certain ram slots able to boot.

- Clear CMOS again. Remove the battery while your pc is off state. Including the power source to the psu. Remove it and wait for a good 10secs. Then turn on the source and put back the CMOS Battery again and turn on the PC.

- Only test 1 RAM on the RAM slot A1. Only with CPU, RAM & GPU. No other components attached. Not even HDD or SSD.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes. I have tried running with just 1 stick, and I have tried all ram slots. I also tried running with only mobo + cpu + hsf, with ram and gpu, just to catch if there's the problem might change, which it didn't.

My last 2 asus were pretty good to me after a ton of misses... abit, ecs, msi, dfi, even an asus board. all face issues under a yr, so much so I used to pick Abit to my default go to board until they went under becos the rma center back then was next to sls. Only had luck when the ROG stuff first hit the market.


I live in yishun. I'm thankful if anyone is interested in helping. Anyway, I also send asus a support ticket so let's see what they have to say. Still, the most important step is probably to get a ddr4 ram to see if the mobo can actually bootup, and perhaps see if update bios can help

what is your mobo model? asus have this feature which allows you to upgrade or downgrade your bios without the cpu or ram. might want to give that out a try if it allows you to.
