Hi guys. I recently bought a Ryzen 1700 with a Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 mobo and ran into some issues with overclocking. Hopefully some experts here can shed some light regarding this.

The problem I encountered was that when I tried to OC my chip to 3.8Ghz@1.35V, the clock speed will constantly drop down to 500Mhz and back to 3800Mhz after about 10mins of stress testing with either Aida64 or OCCT linpack.

I'm quite certain that it isn't thermal throttling as I'm using a H100i AIO and the CPU package temp stays around 55-60 degrees during full load with those OC settings so I'm slightly baffled by why the clocks are fluctuating to such an extend.

In my BIOS I have changed these settings

Core Performance Boost Disabled
Global C-state Control Disabled
Windows HPET Disabled
AMD Cool & Quiet Disabled
Bios Version F7

Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Wow. Thanks for your suggestion. After further checks my vrm temp was hitting above 100 degrees under full load thus causing the frequencies to fluctuate.

I've dismantled my wraith cooler and used the fan as an active cooler for my vrm. Temps are now in the 80-90 range even with 1.35V. :D

Wah. So terrible for this board? I thought with the heatsink the situation should be good enough for oc.

I guess there will always be differences between B350 and X370 boards when it comes to overclocking. Sweet spot without active cooling on the VRM for me is 3.7Ghz @ 1.25V. VRM temp would still hover around the 90-100 degrees mark but at least the clocks do not fluctuate.

For R7 + b350 boards, only a few heatsinks can handle. Off the top of my head, msi gaming series, mortar and tomahawk. Asrock any pro/gaming series and asus prime plus. Dont even look at gigabyte as their b350 heatsink really cmi.

Of course if you use any of the 4 cores like 1400/1500x then any b350 should handle the heat fine

But Asus B350M-A have no heatsink at all. Iirc, Tech YES City YouTube channel did tried, DIY Heatsink on that board does improve OC stability.

The B350-PLUS is fine with the heatsink slightly similar to the X370 counterpart.

3.8 GHz at 1.35V is really high voltage. Try to reduce the Voltage.. I've seen 3.8 GHz at 1.3V +/- 0.25

Or use 3.7 GHz at 1.25 +/- 0.25

VRMs normal operating temperatures can reach up to 125C before having issues.

I was trying to determine the maximum frequency that I could reach with the AMD recommended safe voltage limit. Turns out 3.8Ghz was the max I could reach. 3.9 crashed within 5 mins of OCCT linpack. Gonna try lowering the voltage once I have time.
