My Mac Version: Mac Mini OSX 10.6.8
Safari Version: 5.1.8

This started happening a few days ago.

When I switch on my mac, Safari won't connect to internet at all. I have to restart it, and only then Safari can connect to internet.

After using Safari for about 10-15 mins, Safari will suddenly drop connection and I'm not able to load any website at all. I close the program and reclick Safari but it still won't connect. I have to restart the entire Mac, then only will Safari connect to internet. In the process of using Safari, It will drop connection from time to time and I will have to restart Mac to use the internet. It's very frustrating.

I have reset Safari and cleared all caches and it's still happening, the dropping connection.

Please can anyone help?

It could be your internet connection, not so much safari. Or it could be the remote site.

Open a Terminal window, and just type ping your.isp.url.

Code:
E.g.

ping www.singnet.com.sg

Ctrl-C to break the Ping process.

You should be able to check if your connection is consistent. Your expected results are something like this:

Code:
PING www.singnet.com.sg (165.21.5.6): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=0 ttl=56 time=17.511 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=17.478 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=2 ttl=56 time=19.701 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=3 ttl=56 time=19.838 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=4 ttl=56 time=19.817 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=5 ttl=56 time=18.992 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=6 ttl=56 time=19.417 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=7 ttl=56 time=19.353 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=8 ttl=56 time=19.530 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=9 ttl=56 time=21.931 ms
64 bytes from 165.21.5.6: icmp_seq=10 ttl=56 time=18.226 ms

Thanks Dan. I'll try when I get home later. I'm using Starhub, so I instead of singnet I'll type in
ping www.starhub.com.sg ?
And may I know what should I do after receiving the ping results?

Just let it run to see if the connection is stable. If you have dropped packets, you'll know it's a connection issue.

If it's not then perhaps it's your router or your Airport card that's faulty. You could test with a wired connection to see if anything changes.

Hi Dan,

I just tried it, and these messages came out

eg. Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 (... and so forth) until I control C to break it, then it says:
12 packets transmitted, 0 packets received 100% packet loss..

Could you help explain what just happened?

Btw, my mac is wired to a router actually, which in turn is wired to the modem. The dropped connection thing is still happening. But I have tried this: When it dropped, I switch on Airport, then I can receive signal to use internet, but after a while, connection also drop, so I will switch off Airport and then the connection is back on.. I dun need to restart mac.

I dun think anything might be wrong or faulty with my mac.. could it be the router, you think?

Thanks so much for helping.

This is puzzling. It sure sounds like a connection issue. Perhaps try with another router. If you want to rule it out before committing to a purchase, it might be good to test with another stable connection somewhere else if you can - bring the Mini to a friend's or relative's place and test it on their network. Test it both wired and wireless.

It could also be the starhub modem, so don't rule that out.

Thanks for all the help and suggestion Dan and malaung.

I've yet to try anything yet so I'm still suffering from the dropped connection.

I' also very hesitant to try resetting anything as suggested by malaung coz my mini is on Leopard, not Mountain Lion, so it might be different (?).

In any case, I just want to thank both of you. I'll see how for now.
