Just received an update from Samsung. Most notable changes are:

You now have the quick-access pane on the left (which Note II already has). If you don't see the tab, hold the "Back" key and it will appear.

Along with the above, you now have "multi-window" feature - top half and bottom half of screen can be divided into two separate apps. Just drag the apps from the quick-access pane one by one.

You can now customize the notification panel toggles (WiFi, GPS, etc) and turn off the brightness slider. You can choose what toggles you want and re-arrange them to your liking. I chose 5 most useful ones (to me) and that also helped rid of the stupid animation :)

PS: for those who are gonna start criticising "you waited for an update for this? Just root and flash cm" just go away lol coz I don't give a damn about some rom and this post is just an update for those on stock and wanting to know what's new.

you brought to samsung service centre to update or through kies / OTA

It's being pushed OTA. I just received the notification to update as well. In the midst of downloading the 170+MB file

I just checked for an update and I'm currently downloading the update as well. I'm on a Singtel set, Starhub line.

Edit: I cancelled the update because of the problem with contacts not appearing on messaging. I'm quite busy these few weeks, so I can't deal with my contacts not appearing. :(

My contacts are all google contacts. Just delete my google account on the phone, reboot, add google account, sync contact, and the contacts appear in messaging again.

No need to reboot. I just removed the Google account and added it back. Once the contacts synced the messaging app was showing names properly. I think it's a caching problem. Looks like the Google contacts cache needed a refresh.

So yea guys, don't hold the update for this issue. It's easily fixable :)

As said, I re-logged in to my google account and the contacts came back.

Thanks

I've never ever gone to a service centre for a software update.. LOL. You can do it through Kies, but it's much easier to do OTA. Android has had OTA update support long before iOS did. :)

If you didn't already get a notification, simply go to Settings > About device > Software update and force check there.

Fun fact: Note II 4G had 3 updates today, one after the other, and none of them broke the Messaging app!

Tried no update yet on Starhub Set.

Maybe your contacts are on the phone and not in Google (bad idea to store in phone only). In this case either try "Merge with Google account" or try export contacts to SD card, delete them from the Contacts app, then import them back from SD card.

How to do that? Just remove account then add back?

Yes, Settings > Google > your email > Remove account.
Then Settings > Add account > follow instructions to add ur account back. Wait for it to finish syncing contacts.

Btw see my previous reply first.
