Just want to share that I have a HK SD Note20 Ultra and have been using GPay because of it for the last few months... and the rewards is much better than SamsungPay for me. SPay rewards are ok but not always relevant for me (I’m not a bubble tea drinker for example). But GPay instant cashback rewards are always relevant. I realized that in 1 month of using GPay, I’m getting more rewards as compared to 1 year of using SPay.

I also realised GPay is accepted almost anywhere with PayWave. I managed to pay for items using my mobile even when the GPay logo is not there. I did not set up any other form of NFC payment with my Note20.

Would really recommend you guys to try GPay.

How you get HK SD note 20 ? Any local seller?
Able to use nfc for bus/train?

I just started to use samsung pay a few days ago and I have a somewhat "beginners question"

I understand samsung pay hast 2 types of modes, NFC and MST. So if a particular retailer does not have an NFC terminal but accepts credit card payments (card swipe at the side) i should tell the cashier I paying by credit card and then tap my phone right?

I encountered this incident yesterday, it was a pushcart stall at one of the malls, when I told the cashier samsung pay she said does not accept so I told her credit card, and then I tap my phone on her terminal, she seem quite lost and gave me a strange look as usually they will swipe a physical card. Shortly later I received the notification on my Samsung Pay app that the payment was successful.

I showed her payment was in but she insisted its not and I must give her a card to swipe. After much exchange, she asked me to hold on while she made a call supposedly to her boss to check on the payment. A few minutes later she said ok received.

In summary, if a retailer doesn't support NFC payment i.e Google pay, apple pay etc. I should tell them I'm paying by credit card and then tap my phone correct? Perhaps my push cart encounter was due to a similarly inexperienced cashier and equally an inexperienced samsung pay user like me hahahaha

Would appreciate long term Samsung Pay users to enlighted me on this.

The problem is with the cashier and the retailer. A lot of cashiers are poorly trained and the retail company does not bother. You might want to write a strongly worded feedback letter to the company to tell them to "wake up their idea".

the terminal should print out a receipt that indicates the transaction has gone through.

She did not even bother, just insisting a physical card to be swiped. To give the cashier the benefit of doubt, the traditional way is swipe card then wait to verify payment from the receipt. So perhaps the swiping didn't happen so nothing to verify

time is hard means the sales person should work doubly hard to make it user friendly for customers to make payment and not impede the process.

can't be. if the transaction goes through, the credit card terminal/machine will auto print the credit card receipt. does not matter swipe card or contactless. but to be frank, not many credit card machine use swiping method cos most of them are contactless already.

I think singapore doesn't support mst alr for local cards. If a payment terminal here doesn't support nfc it won't work with Samsung pay.

Physical cards nowadays is no more swipe but insert into the slot where it will use the chip. Therefore mst is irrelevant in sg context. Although I think maybe it will work for overseas cards? Most banks here disabled magnetic stripe transactions if I'm not wrong

Oh i didnt know they stopped swiping cards, even if its the case, Samsung Pay MST will still be able to work provided the terminal is equipped with the swiping "port". I believe so long as the terminal has this "port" Samsung pay MST will still be useful.

Samsung pay is 1 level higher than the rest is due to this dual capabilities.

i don't remember if terminals in sg still have the magnetic reader. physical card i always see them insert with the chip.

in any case, even if the reader supports it, the bank may still reject local magnetic stripe transactions due to EMV requirements so it's really hit and miss. be it using MST or physical card magnetic stripe.
