according to samsung magician s/w, OP (Over-Provisioning) improves performance & lifespan of SSD.

i thought SSD already had some OP built-in. so is it worth to sacrifice some spaces for user-defined OP?

personally i do set OP for all my ssd after reading all benefits of doing so.

i have 4 SSD in my system all set the OP manually

1 OS SSD: 10% (to avoid SSD data corruption)
3 Game SSD: 5% (not important as only for gaming but want to extent the SSD life span)

OP can be done to any ssd. just unallocate at the end you

even better is the rapid feature. can use up to 4GB ram as cache so your ssd will always be fast

thanks! still considering becoz based on TDW & daily writes, my SSDs can already last 20~30+ years:LOL:

can window partition manager do the partition resize & unallocate at the end? or need 3rd party partition tools like minitools?

may i know how much speed improvement% you got after using rapid?
wow your 850 evo at 49C, that was quite hot!?

you can pass down your SSDs to next gen liao:LOL:
may i know how you calculate TBW after 30% OP?

https://www.kingston.com/en/ssd/overprovisioning
  • Less over-provisioning also means that Total Bytes Written (TBW) in Terabytes on each drive will be lower. The greater the OP percentage, the longer an SSD can last.
  • When the TBW numbers are translated into Drive Writes Per Day (DWPD) over the warranty period, we can see that drives with 32% OP almost reach double the amount of writes per day

You can use diskmgmt to reduce partition size and have unallocated space at the end. Or use ssd software, it does the same thing.

Speed increase by 3~4 times

hmm.. either 3rd party software or windows default disk manager can do the trick.

Use the magician to op 10%-20%, and your SSD will last very very long...

U still can give zero provisioning... its usable... the problem will happen when you have bad habits like me to use the laptop disk up to 100%, your SSD will die premature and lost all data within a year....

how to enable OP for western digital drive? the WD SSD dashboard i dont see the option on OP. The samsung one have.

You can use any software to repartition at e.g. 90%, leaving the balance for OP.

Do remember to check whether the software will wipe out existing data. Some like Partition Magic will keep the existing data.

tried rapid mode, only improve sequential in benchmark but in actual use don't felt any differences
