Any recommendation which area to stay in SF? South market or chinatown?

Thank you!

SGD100-150/night is good.

Currently looking which area to stay is better? Should I stick to places which are near the BART?

Thanks!

Not Chinatown; Chinatown hotels aren't brilliant and the public transport's a bit tough. It's easy to get to SoMa or Union Square on BART; Chinatown you've gotta BART and then schlep a few blocks north.

SoMa and Union Square are fine areas to stay, but you're going to have real trouble getting anything <$150 SGD a night (basically $120 USD). San Francisco's an expensive city, and if you're in town at the same time as one of the big tech conferences (CloudForce, Oracle OpenWorld, etc etc), forget it - even the Hampton Inn on Mission Street which normally goes for $150/nt goes up to $700.

What are your dates? We'll have a look.

Thanks for sharing!

I am looking at dates 17th dec till 21st dec

OK, for your dates, I'd look at the Good Hotel (US$84/nt on RoomKey.com). If you want to splurge, though, the five-star W San Francisco is US $155/nt for those dates.

I'll be staying at the W San Francisco for 2 nights in late January 2017. Is the location okay? First time in San Francisco.

Oh yeah, the W's fine - it's just across the street from Yerba Buena Gardens, right next to the new SF Museum of Modern Art, and two minutes' walk from BART/Muni if you want to get around town.

Thanks! will it be easy to get to train stations from the hotel?

yea its about 15 mins walk from powell station to the hotel. you will have to get through steep slopes though, will be an issue when you are carrying huge luggages.

Thanks! But basically, if I am to stay at Union Square/SoMA area, it will be quite a walking distance from the nearest BART station right? correct me if I am wrong?

Perhaps I might be mistaken, MUNI and BART is two different railway system right?

Thank you!

Nope, Powell BART station is right next to Union Square - about five minutes walk downhill - and SoMA is just on the other side of Market Street. The W, like I said, is about two minutes' walk from Powell BART; the Good Hotel is about two minutes' walk from Civic Center BART.

Different systems, but they run parallel to each other along Market street, so it's easy to switch from one to the other.

Sidetracking, would like to ask opinion which would be a better choice (price/security) between airbnb and hotels to stay in cities in SF and NYC?

AirBNB's cheaper, but with hotels you tend to know exactly what you're getting. I'd usually go for a hotel.

Thanks, no plans on what exactly to do but continental breakfast is covered in the hotel. So I'm left with lunch and dinner outside. Guess I'll keep things simple and walk around to see the sights and catch some Pokemon at the same time.

Hi lcpteck, did u book directly from the W San Francisco hotel website itself? The only deal i saw so far was some credit card promotions thru expedia. Sadly, this hotel is not included in the promo :( HAHA

I've run across plenty of Pokeymans at Yerba Buena Gardens, which is just across the street from the W. Also you're right next to the SF Museum of Modern Art, which is frankly fantastic; it's just reopened after a huge three-year renovation, and I think it's the equal of the NYC MoMA.

If you're looking for good lunch places, hop on Muni to Embarcadero station and go to the Ferry Building; there's a ton of brilliant food places there, and it's extremely popular with the finance crowd that works around there.

For dinner, it really depends what cuisines you like. Hop on Yelp and see what gets high ratings around where you are (though if you see Hakkasan on the list near your hotel, probably skip it and look further out - it's not bad, but it's horrifically expensive and a bit overrated really).
