I have encountered this twice in BKK. Once outside central world and once outside siam paragon.

Was early so malls not opened yet, and this guy came up to tell us "it's the buddha's birthday so it's a holiday and shops open late". He then asked if we wanna go visit the biggest temple and can arrange transport for us.

The thing is that the van will bring u to buy some "diamonds" and "gems" elsewhere.

We didn't fall for it anyway but have colleagues who did. A couple was so bought by the story and even said they had been converted to become passionate about diamonds. Didn't have the heart to tell them to go verify the diamonds they bought.

A variation of the buddha's birthday is that today is a special day and the government is subsidizing the tuk tuk's petrol, so a ride for the whole day is just 30 baht. Of course there's no such thing and the ride will land you at some shop and eventually cost you alot of money.

Just smile and politely tell them you are not interested in shopping for..... They will get the message and move on.

There could be instances of people who are too friendly to strangers..before they start their sales talk, just tell them you've been to Bangkok many times and just here for food. They will move on.

Even if brought to the shops they can't force you to buy anything.

For those who are interested in the night scene but end up in the 'wrong' place is another matter. I'll let the expects talk about this.

won't really cost a lot of money if u dont buy things from the shops where they drop u. The time wasted will be the most infuriating thing.

Yes, but they also use high-pressure tactics to get you to buy once in their shop.

It could be that there are some cases where you can just smile and walk away from the shop, but from what I gathered, they often won't let you leave till you buy their wares.
