Seagate 1TB harddrive problem! NEED HELP!

Hi, I have a friend who has a 5 months old 1TB Harddrive from seagate. Been treating the hdd like a baby, but one day, the folders in it cannot be accessed! and at the same time, it hangs his computer. tried with several laptops n computers, same thing. The harddrive just "decided" to crash?!

He went down to simlim and went to a shop for data retrieval.
Full quotation:

99% data restoral (1-2- weeks) $2,350

I hear the price and i got a shock!

Do anyone out there knows of any good n reliable n "not-such-a-rip-off-price" IT people OR shops whos able to do data retrieval to 99% or even 100%? The datas in the HDD is so damn important that my friend's literally going bonkus.

Really really appreciate the help and suggestions for people or places who can do the job at a cheaper price!

If the HDD has not failed completely (i.e. not mechanical failure) and it's just a MBR corruption or some other data corruption, you can try to extract the old data using software means. Google for EASEUS Data Recovery to do this. This is a software based recovery and will not be able to get back data from a totally dead/undetectable HDD.

There's another type of recovery that involves opening up the HDD in a clean room environment and this is the expensive way. Normally costs about 1k - 2k for this kind of service. There is one such service at Science Park. Sim Lim does not have this kind of hardware based data recovery so paying for anything more than 100-200 (IF you do not know how to do software based recovery yourself) is a rip-off.

For this type of firmware problem, you can try Accplus Technologies.

They have the tools to repair firmware issues without opening your drives. And I think their prices are quite competitive and reasonable.

No need to go sim lim, I don't suppose these fellas knows what is data recovery. No one will charge or give quotation in the matter listed above because no one can guarantee how much data can retrieved before its even tried. So if it is an easy case and you just want 75% data retrieved, and he managed to easily achieve 100%, is he going to delete the rest of the 25% data before returning to you ? I saw the quotation and I feel like laughing.

Go to a reputable data recovery centre, which you can google using "singapore data recovery" if the software approach doesn't work, pay up the heavy fee as a learning experience, and then go get a reliable RAID system to store your information. If not, practice diligent backup and recovery operations.

Even the most reliable hard disk can crash the next day you bought it, so don't think electronic will last forever. When it goes, they can go without warning.

Genuine data recovery centres are not ridiculous when they ask for such pricing because they are not meant to serve peasants like you and me, they are price tags for enterprises whom can afford them. If you are referring to the quotation from sim lim square, indeed, not only they are ridiculous, they are subpar in such service at most.

Such services are not like selling computer parts where you get customers all the time ? The computer grade air clean/laboratory room is not a simple thing to built and maintain ? How much renumeration do you think engineers whom possess such niche skill set should command ? If you need to keep these people in a running company, you will know its not going to be a cheap service given you don't find enterprises going to them all the time when most can easily implement redundancies and disaster recovery in their project solutions.

So I don't find even SGD5K expensive, it's just some people don't think their data is worthy of protection investment, that's all.

thanks to all, i would inform my friend about it. he just took back his HDD from the simlim shop. he would be getting opinions from acctech and others as mentioned. Really thankful for everyone's help! =)
now i know what to do too if i meet this kind of incident with my HDD! (CHOY!!!!)

don't only know what to do, must prevent it from happening (backups, redundancy, etc)

Ya lo.. so my hdd, those need to double back up, i better double back them up!
