I had been using my Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive for about 3 years (which is almost 90% full).

last week suddenly become unrecognized. from win10 disk management , I can see the hard drive but what suppose to be 1 (4tb) partition become 2 partitions raw.

using testdisk, I'm able to access the drive and copy out all the files without any error or corruption .

after copy out all files, I decide to delete partitions and format.

1. using win10 disk management

first I delete the 2 partitions then convert to gpt . no problem but when I quick format ntfs . it took very long then show fail. and the hdd disappear from disk management . I unplug the usb and re-plug in . it took more 5 minutes for the HDD appear in disk management. I retry format same result.
Next , I try devide into 2 partitions and format. same result failed.

2. using seagate discwizard
I try to create MBR advanced format . 1 partitions (4tb) created but when I format same result failed.

last I going back to disk management. this time I convert it back to MBR which created 2 partition (2TB and 1.6TB) only 2TB can be use. I do quick format and finish OK very fast .
I unplug and plug in the usb , my win10 very fast detect the HDD unlike when i create 4tb partition.

I did slow format on the 2TB partitions which took almost 5 hours. no error , no bad sector.

I had tried take out the HDD and put in other external HDD case, same issues problem .

I'm loss. I not sure whether the HDD is damage or not . There's no weird sound when boot and since no corruption on all files copy out , I assume the HDD is still working fine. if that case why when create 4tb partition is OK but when format failed?

any suggestion ?

Download HDTune and do the following:
1. check the Health tab of your seagate drive
2. run Error check (do not click Quick scan)
