Seagate BackUp Plus Hub 8TB died

My spanking new Seagate BackUp Plus Hub 8TB died after 46 hours of up-time and two 7TB writes. It's used for backup so was kept in storage most of the time. Refused to power up or be detected when I tried to do a third backup yesterday evening.

Shucked the casing and the HDD worked fine in my PC. Got a Barracuda 8TB instead of the Seagate Archive I was expecting. :)

So another useful lesson in always having more than one copy of your data and don't trust external HDDs too much.

Get a nas with raid 1 or better configuration.

Some of the External HDDs like you said use the desktop grade HDDs. Not uncommon, there was a period people were buying the external ones just to pry open (ever since they made it less simple to open) to get the drive inside.

Yes commonly also the point of failure could be the connector and the external casing's micro-board.

I bought one from amazon last year for 130usd. Use it as internal 8tb hdd.

Nowadays I can't trust new HDDs :s13:

If buy new bigger one, I just copy the current HDD(s) over but keep the data; this way any HDD death will be limited to a few years for archives and minimal for important.

I'm starting to consider RAID5 using 4TB drives for a single big volume but looks like the RAID system itself has even worse death rates.

Get a nas with raid 1 or better configuration.

even with this you still need external backup. because power can fail, raid configuration can be corrupted, etc.

This sounds bad. Even though the write is quite high for 46 hours of usage, it is very disappointing to know that the drive did not even last 2 days.

Personally, I have avoided hard drive with too high a capacity of late. My recent purchase, I maxed out at 4TB. More storage equates to more potential data loss. Backing up requires more money and the process of backing up is also very tedious, i.e. it will take a long time to back up due to the size and transfer rate.

If need reliability, use aws glacier. But it'll cost you 32usd per month for 8tb storage

It doesn't really matter all that much how you backup your data, be it cloud, NAS whatever. So long as you actually do backups.

Considering the number of threads we have had so far about data recovery services for failed HDDs .... :)

As mentioned, I have capped myself to 4TB now. Anything I need to store and less critical, I will just store it on the cloud, i.e. MS/ Google Cloud. I feel it saves a lot of trouble maintaining NAS and such.

I agree with watzup_ken.

Have you seen? Even a NAS can fail. Such as a power supply problem. And putting it into a new NAS might make you lose all the files in the previous NAS due to the RAID configuration and other factors.

I went back to sticking to 2TB though am planning to upgrade to 4TB and stick around that being the limit. At least, if a drive is failing, I will have a few more hours to note down all the files I have inside it and try my best to transfer as much files out quickly before the drive completely fails.

The bigger the drive, the harder it is to retrieve all the files before it fails. Thus my current limit to just 2TB at the moment as I have experienced failing drives. And my limit cap has helped so much in getting as much files out even when I can only retrieve files is KBps speeds instead of MBps.

Choosing bigger drives is like a death sentence for all those personal data. It's a complete waste of time and money to make my way out to find another 8TB backup drive to recover my files into.

But if you are willing to take the risk, so be it. Good luck!

Raid you HDD. Then back up to a NAS. Also back up to cloud. Then back up to another NAS. Then back up to a few other storage SSD. Also, ask your friend to buy a NAS and you back up to your friend NAS. Then ask your friend to back up to cloud. Then back up again to another NAS. Then ask your friend to back up your back up to his friend back up. Then tell your friend's friend to do the same thing, back up to NAS, then to cloud.
