How do i ensure remote desktop access from external internet sources to be secure?

Tried teamviewer but it was very sluggish. Saw a comment about about improving the performance via port forwarding but port forwarding seems to have security issues.

please advise! thanks!

Use RDP/VNC and connect back to your pc via VPN

I am quite noob at remote access despite searching for days, please bear with me. So the VPN (paid service) must have port forwarding as an option?

VPN to my knowledge is basically hiding the IP of the host server. But in order to access a pc server within the router, i would need port to be open? something like 24.119.100.5:8800 ?

You need to host the VPN server on your own PC, router. Not pay for a external one.

RDP requires windows 10 pro or enterprise. VNC is used if you have a mac or linux PC

teamviewer and chrome remote desktop are technically not as secure as it runs via a 3rd party server. Teamviewer has been hacked before https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/06/teamviewer-says-theres-no-evidence-of-2fa-bypass-in-mass-account-hack/

can you throw me some lifeline on what solution (brand, model or type of software) i should be looking at? Most of the internet resources were saying about external vpn.

Safest is to simply run your own VPN server, VPN in then simply remote to your required machine.

Of course, your windows must be able to support rdp.

Thanks. It seems more towards server based solution(window server 2016, 2019??? to win 10 clients). Think windows is phrasing out DirectAccess with AlwaysOnVPN.
