How to select the best wifi channel for the 2.4 Ghz band?

Some recommend only selecting from 1, 6 or 11 to avoid overlap.

I did a quick scan of my home area and found my neighbours occupying almost all the channels already.

That's why I avoid 2.4ghz

5Ghz not a good solution too if you have lots of wall block. 5Ghz can achieve higher bandwidth with the recent AC, N mode. The down side? The signal range can't win over 2.4Ghz. 5Ghz not wall friendly and obstacle.

As for channel... Most router will auto assign channel. Just leave it auto or default. The router most likely will pick up those not so congested signal. If you tend to worried for overlap, you can set your own prefer channel.

yes why not ? not sweet spot.. depends on scenario and situation....

today those channels might be good for you, next month another story.

Cause all use 5 channel for example

Channel 6 use 3,4,5,6,7 ...

So I think see the graph more accurate ...

most of them uses auto channel which router will automatically switches channel to get the 'best' one.

either you can try setting auto or just go wired if you are using desktop or laptop.

If you want to do light surfing on use smartphone a decent 2.4ghz signal is good enough even with raping signals because other signals will be quite weak trying to pass through the wall of your house in a way.

OK here goes. Today is Monday, so most of my neighbours turned off their wireless routers and are out at work or in school. Less busy network compared to a weekend.

I currently set mine at channel 11. Working well for now perhaps until evening or weekend.

My own router signal is consistent throughout at around -70 indicated by the blue horizontal line.

One strange observation I have from monitoring these 2 days, is that at regular intervals for certain period, I see 1 or 2 SSIDs that appear and their signal spike from -90+ to -20+, from the bottom with the weakest signal to the top surpassing my own router. Each sudden spike lasts maybe 0.5 second, and is repeated like once every 1 or 2 minutes in between. You can see the orange spikes (peaks and valleys) in the graph on the top right corner of screen shot. What could they be?

My guess would be it is sending impulse signal to find Wifi devices far away. Probably only some router has this feature.
